Within this episode we discuss the following:

Catch-up

Headaches & colds – 10 days Rob, similar for Michael, everything behind schedule 😦

2p incident

Marketing – Meeting with Victoria this morning in Brighton, with a 2nd tentative meeting with Jodie in Lewes, but I received a message saying that Victoria couldn’t make it, because she had been hospitalised, so I messaged Jodie and headed straight to Lewes in the hope that she could make an earlier appointment, my Sat Nav however took me to the wrong ‘High Street’ (about 30 minutes in the wrong direction), so I corrected the journey, finally parked the car, payed my car-park fee, rushing to get to Jodie, then noticed an email from Victoria saying she was looking forward to seeing me shortly, in Brighton!  I jumped back in the car (£2 down) and headed to Brighton to honour my original meeting!  About an hour later I had a text from Jodie saying that she had only just received my message and would I still be up for it?  What? Who had been hospitalised?  It turns out a third marketing person, Daniel had emailed me and somewhere along the lines I had assumed the wrong person.  What a day.  Due to the delays reaching Brighton I couldn’t see Jodie, so I’m hoping to see her in a couple of weeks time.

Facebook are creating image recognition technology to create high resolution population density maps (to within 10m), using neural networks trained to quickly determine whether or not buildings were present or not in satellite images.  The purpose is to enable Facebook to determine which areas need better internet access, what technologies would work best and could help with disaster handling too.

Mark Zuckerberg made a surprise appearance at the Samsung Galaxy S7 keynote to explain how putting a VR headset on can be social, he said “Pretty soon, we’re going to live in a world where everyone has the power to share and experience whole scenes, as if we’re there in person”, he also announced the creation of a dedicated VR team – although Devology mentioned this a few weeks ago in our news!

Facebook make Gear VR videos clearer and faster to load, by using ‘dynamic streaming’ resulting in VR videos that are higher quality and more data efficient on the lightweight device.  “Dynamic streaming” requires Facebook to process and store all of its videos in multiple resolutions. It only shows the best version for the spot you’re actually looking at — the rest is a lower resolution file that’s automatically swapped out as you look left and right. “By doing this, we’ve quadrupled the resolution quality of 360 streaming video in VR, while reducing the amount of required bandwidth by four times,”

Facebook Live Video is rolling out internationally

To check whether you have the livestreaming tool, select Update Status at the top of your News Feed and hit the new Live Video icon (it should display a banner notifying you of its existence). You’ll then be able to choose who you want to share your stream with and add a description before broadcasting it to the world.

Taking of video, Instagram is now going to show you how many people have viewed your video, within the next several weeks.  It will only count if the video has been played more than 3 seconds, in other words, if you scroll past a video it will not count.

http://www.cnet.com/news/instagram-video-count

Facebook Instant Articles are extending the number of publishers who can use the tool, as of April Facebook is opening it up to any publisher interested in leveraging it.  This will mean more news articles directly within Facebook so you’ll probably spend more time within it and this will lead to more money through ads to Facebook.  On that note – Robs shares are back up 5 1/4% for Facebook and 12% for Amazon.

http://www.engadget.com/2016/02/17/more-facebook-instant-articles/

Facebook Instagram has added two factor authentication but is rolling it out ‘slowly’.  Two factor authentication usually means that if you attempt to login (especially from a new device) you’ll receive an SMS text with a code that you must also enter.  However, TechCrunch have reported that it behaves somewhat differently to that, instead Instagram gave people reset codes that they had to screenshot or write down when they activated the feature.  This just seems too bizarre and I wouldn’t be surprised if this changes.

If you had been caught selling drugs (cannabis) and get a two year suspended sentence, you might be a little appreciative that your not in jail, perhaps humble.   But no, a UK man decides to ‘diss the judge’ on social media, he said

“Cannot believe my luck 2 year suspended sentence beats the 3 year jail yes pal! Beverly Lunt go suck my ****,” he posted. The status update has since been removed.

and then followed that up on Facebook with

“I want to say how sorry I am for what I wrote about Judge Lunt and my sentence. I was very lucky not to be sent to prison and I was very stupid to have written what I did. I want to say sorry to Judge Lunt and to anyone else who was upset or offended by my thoughtless post which I did not mean.”

Facebook is testing on Android SMS and multi-account support

“At Messenger we are always trying to create new ways for people to communicate seamlessly with everyone,” said a Facebook spokesperson. “Right now, we’re testing the ability for people to easily bring all their conversations — from SMS and Messenger — to one place. It’s a really simple way to get, see and respond to all your SMS messages in just one app. By choosing to access your SMS messages in Messenger, they’re right alongside all the other enhanced features that Messenger offers.”

The likely reason why it’s Android only at this time is that I’m unaware of any API’s within Apple that will enable you to consume and certainly not post text messages without intervention from the user.

As for multiple accounts they said “Millions of people share phones with their family and friends. Until now, there hasn’t been an easy way for people to access their individual Messenger accounts from shared devices. To address this, we’ve launched a feature on Android to enable multiple people to log in and use Messenger from a single phone.”

Marc Andreessen a Silicon Valley investor and Facebook board member on Wednesday took to Twitter to apologize for a series of offensive tweets he posted the night before apparently referencing India’s colonial history. The world’s second-most populous country, with more than a billion people, was a British colony until 1947. Andreessen said he withdrew his comments “in full and without reservation.”

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg tried to distance himself from his board member. “I want to respond to Marc Andreessen’s comments about India yesterday,” wrote Zuckerberg on his Facebook page. “I found the comments deeply upsetting, and they do not represent the way Facebook or I think at all.”

Facebook’s the ‘Sports Stadium’ was launched only in January and it looks like it struggled to keep up with the supper bowl, with 200 million posts people were getting post updates late, they vented on Twitter with posts such as

Facebook said

“Due to overwhelming traffic and activity, people visiting Facebook Sports Stadium during the Super Bowl may have experienced a delay with the scores and play-by-play information available in the Matchup and Stats tabs, or a problem with posting in the Friends tab”

Facebook make it harder to scroll past videos, they are rolling out a tool that automatically captions video ads, the hope is that you’ll stop, even if briefly, to read what a promo is saying instead of skipping to the next post.

Last episode we heard Twitters Jack Dorsey say that he was absolutely 100% keeping Twitter ‘LIVE’, however, since then, we can now see that you’ll instead have a ‘what you missed’ summary that can be reverted back to the list timeline in an instant.

Twitter is making customer service even better on Twitter with two simple tools, moving tweeters from tweets to direct messages and feedback seem key.

1 – A simple way to start  a direct message – available now

Direct Messages are a great way for customers to have a private conversation with a business. Customer service conversations often start in Tweets, but then need to transition to a private channel when personal information is required. We’re making that transition as easy as a single click. A business can now add a deep link to their Tweets that automatically displays a call to action button, which allows the customer to send the business a Direct Message, quickly and easily.

2 – Customer feedback – available over the next few weeks

We’re also announcing a new feature called Customer Feedback that enables people to privately share their opinions with a business after a service interaction.

Care teams have told us they love the open-ended feedback they get from people via Tweets and Direct Messages, but they also need the ability to survey customers in a structured way to better measure and improve their service experience. Customer Feedback makes it easy for customers to share their feedback with a business after a customer service conversation. With this feature, businesses will be able to use two industry standard question formats: Net Promoter ScoreSM (NPS®) and Customer Satisfaction (CSAT).

Twitter helps you find the perfect GIF, it’s being rolled out over a few weeks, you will be able to click the GIF button when you compose a tweet or message and browse popular categories or search with a few keywords to find a GIF. You’ll only be able to post one GIF at a time and you can’t share a regular, not-moving photo and a GIF in the same tweet.  Giphy and Riffsy are providing the GIF search engine.

Twitter plans to set up their ‘Twitter Trust & Safety Council’ to combat online abuse and more than 40 organisations are joining the council.  The groups in the council include:

  • Safety advocates, academics and researchers focused on children, media and efforts to create a kinder Internet.
  • Grassroots groups that use Twitter to build up and rally followers.
  • Community groups seeking to stop harassment and bullying, as well as those focused on mental health and suicide prevention.

A Twitter spokesman said the company hopes the council will enable it to tackle “issues more efficiently and quickly.”

SnapChat wants users to pay to make their own Geo Filters, from £5.  The minimum geofenced area starts at 20,000 feet; a portion of city block or enough to cover a business location. You can expand that sizing up to 5 million square feet, which Snapchat says will be enough to cover several city blocks. As for timing, you can have the filter live for anywhere from an hour up to 30 days.

YAHOO / TUMBLR

Because we have discussed Yahoo a lot in the past, I just wanted to update you with the fact they are killing digital magazines and  laid off its Tech publication’s editor-in-chief.   Yahoo media division’s global editor-in-chief Martha Nelson announced on Tumblr that most of its digital magazines, particularly Yahoo Food, Health, Parenting, Makers, Travel, Autos and Real Estate, are shutting down  — News, Sports, Finance and Lifestyle will carry on.  This has been blamed on a 16.5% active-user drop on the Yahoo homepage.  I took a quick look and it does feel like a somewhat dated style which doesn’t help.

Twitter and Facebook support Apple with its fight against the FBI – it’s all about not introducing backdoors into the operating system software, enabling the FBI to gather the intelligence it needs, that would be fine, but leaves massive security holes for hackers.

However, it would seem the FBI don’t give up easily and could use dead suspects fingerprints to unlock iPhones!

Happy Friends Day!

Thursday February 4, marks Facebook’s 12th birthday.  “Each year we recognize this day as Friends Day and invite the world to celebrate and reflect on the importance of connecting.

When people connect, powerful things happen and lives are changed. We see this on Facebook every day, whether it’s an exchange with an old friend that brings a smile to your face or a new connection that changes your life path, or even the world.

To celebrate, we are releasing an updated degrees of separation statistic, highlighting inspiring stories about the power of friendship, and launching new products to further encourage our community to rally around their friends today.

Facebook Community Continues to Grow Closer

We know that people are more connected today than ever before. Over the past five years, the global Facebook community has more than doubled in size. Today we’re announcing that during that same time period, the degrees of separation between a typical pair of Facebook users has continued to decrease to 3.57 degrees, down from 3.74 degrees in 2011. This is a significant reflection of how closely connected the world has become.

Introducing Friends Day Videos

To help our community celebrate the importance of friendship, we’re delivering a personalized Friends Day video to millions of people around the world. These videos stitch together special moments with your friends in a short film that can be edited and shared. People can view their video at the top of News Feed, or by clicking “Watch Yours” below a friend’s Friends Day video.

Telling Stories of Friendship

Friends Day is also an occasion to celebrate extraordinary stories about the power of friendship. GirlCrew, a Facebook group originally created in Dublin, empowers women to find friends and organize events in their area. There are now 22,000 people in GirlCrew Facebook groups in more than 40 cities worldwide. Earlier this week, we hosted an intimate Friends Day event where 18 members of the Facebook community with incredible stories, including GirlCrew, were invited to come to our Menlo Park headquarters.

Best Friends and Friendship Sticker Packs

To give people a fun way to show friends they care, we’re releasing two sticker packs called “Best Friends” and “Friendship.” These packs are now available to download for free in the Sticker Store, which can be accessed in Messenger or at facebook.com/stickers.

This Friends Day, take a moment to connect with your friends, share your Friends Day videos, and post using the hashtag #friendsday.”

Facebook are deleting business pages of medical marijuana dispensaries, for violating Facebooks terms of service.  When asked for comment, a Facebook spokesperson told Engadget, “These pages have been removed for violating our Community Standards, which outline what is and is not allowed on Facebook. Here is a link to our standards.”

Research at Facebook has shown that the 6 degrees of separation have shrunk in the past five years, in 2011 it was calculated by Facebook at 3.74 and now 3.57; we’ve grown more interconnected, thus shortening the distance between any two people in the world.

Rob has 3.44 degrees of separation

Instagram multiple-account support is now available on iOS… at least to some iOS users!  It was seen back in November for Android by downloading a special APK to take advantage.

The question for Social Scheduler is “Will this be supported through the intent API’

http://www.engadget.com/2016/02/04/instagram-multiple-accounts-ios/

Instagram are introducing 60-second video ads (up to 30 seconds was already available), with this comes more revenue for Facebook (yes Rob will be keeping his shares in).  According to Engadget ‘The way the company handles ads isn’t as intrusive as something like YouTube — as a user, you do’t have to wait to scroll past and see what your followers have been posting — but the nature of the feed means it’s still hard to ignore them completely’

There have been lots of reports recently that Twitter are planning changes to your timeline (http://www.engadget.com/2016/02/05/twitters-facebook-style-timeline-could-arrive-next-week/), so it’s no longer in order of newest to oldest, but sorted by what might interest you instead.  Well, Jack Dorsey, CEO of Twitter says that it’s just a rumour.

Originally Engadget ran a poll to see what the reaction was to the original reports.

http://www.engadget.com/2016/02/06/twitter-says-timeline-isnt-changing/

Twitter have been experimenting with animated GIF support in Twitter, for select use, not just for injecting existing animated cat GIFs from the internet, but it sounds like Twitter could partner up with consumer and entertainment brands, such as the Super Bowl to inject trending and GEO located GIFs.  Brands could prepared some GIF’s in advance, or curate special replay GIFs ready for people to inject into their timeline effortlessly.

http://www.engadget.com/2016/02/06/twitter-needs-searchable-gifs-for-fun-and-profit/

Twitter have written a blog titled ‘Combating violent extremism’, in it they highlight that they condemn the user of Twitter to promote terrorism and they since mid 2015 they have suspended over 125,000 accounts for threatening or promoting terrorist acts, primarily related to ISIS.

Twitter have employed more staff, use a proprietary spam-fighting tool-set and co-operating with the FBI.  Twitter have partnered with counter extremist organisations and attended government-convened summits on extremism.

The two last paragraphs contain the most value…

As an open platform for expression, we have always sought to strike a balance between the enforcement of our own Twitter Rules covering prohibited behaviors, the legitimate needs of law enforcement, and the ability of users to share their views freely – including views that some people may disagree with or find offensive.

As many experts and other companies have noted, there is no “magic algorithm” for identifying terrorist content on the internet, so global online platforms are forced to make challenging judgement calls based on very limited information and guidance. In spite of these challenges, we will continue to aggressively enforce our Rules in this area, and engage with authorities and other relevant organizations to find solutions to this critical issue and promote powerful counter-speech narratives.

Google Hangouts are going to improve audio and video quality by using a direct peer-to-peer connection when possible, rather than connecting the call through one of Googles servers.

It should be noted that using direct peer-to-peer between yourself and another person will reveal your IP addresses, which means that it is possible to approximate your location.

Could this be just to improve video and audio quality, or because your skipping their servers, then perhaps it could be cost saving too?!
