Repeating messages to different accounts

How many times have you found yourself in the position where you want to put a message out on many social networks, but repeat the message on only a small subset of accounts?

For example, once a week Michael and I produce the Startup & Marketing Podcast and then notify everyone through Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram and Pinterest.  I post to all of those networks once, then repeat the message on Twitter because it’s more of a news-channel than a social network (apparently).

In the past, you would schedule your message, then ‘copy’ (that is clone) the message with a repeat cycle and the appropriate accounts selected.

Now, you simply choose your ‘repeat’ option as usual…

Screen Shot 2016-05-16 at 01.57.15.png

… and at the top of the accounts panel, you’ll see a new option ‘Repeat mode to use different account selections?’

If you turn this option on, you’ll notice a second column appear.

Screen Shot 2016-05-16 at 01.05.44.png

Now you can choose which accounts are targeted for the 1st message and which accounts are targeted for the subsequently repeated messages.

You can mix and match the account selections as desired, but we suspect you’ll use this feature to target many accounts in the ‘1st’ message and only one or two accounts in your repeated messages.

Remember, you should attempt to use a different editorial copy per social network, this is now easily possible by clicking on the quotation-bubble next to the account(s) you have selected.

Facebook won’t influence how people vote

In a post from CNET Facebook have said that they wouldn’t use its algorithms to influence voting in the US presidential election this November. Facebook are quoted as saying ”We as a company are neutral,” … “We have not and will not use our products in a way that attempts to influence how people vote.”

This was triggered after someone posted the question “ “What responsibility does Facebook have to help prevent President Trump in 2017?”

Instagram introduce video channels in ‘Explore’

“Today [that is April 14th], we’ve started rolling out a new look for Explore featuring video channels.

As people share more videos than ever before, we’re making it easier to discover the ones you’ll love. To begin, you’ll find a personalized channel called “Videos You Might Like” that collects videos from across Instagram’s global community into a seamless viewing experience. And as you scroll through the Explore grid, you may also see “Featured” channels filled with videos on specific topics.”

“Even with these changes, Explore still works the same way: It connects you to posts about your interests from people you don’t yet follow. The more you like, the better Explore gets, adjusting to your preferences and showing you more of the stuff you enjoy. And if you see something you don’t like, tap “See Fewer Posts Like This” in the ‘…’ menu to make your Explore experience even better.

To start, these updates to Explore will only be available in the United States. We’re working to bring this to the rest of the world soon.

Instagram version 7.20 is available today in Apple’s App Store and on Google Play.”

Facebook and VR

If you are interested in Virtual Reality, then in the show notes we have a link to an article from Engadget that covers the F8 conference and Facebooks plans for VR, Engadge sum it up nicely with this paragraph

“It’s not just about watching a movie together or linking an Oculus account to Facebook. It actually involves interacting with another person in a virtual space: chatting, laughing, drawing doodles, sharing photos and, […] taking virtual selfies with virtual selfie sticks”

http://www.engadget.com/2016/04/13/facebook-social-vr/

Robs investment in Facebook

Due to the investment that Facebook are putting into VR, Robs has re-invested back in FB for the foreseeable future, unless there’s money to bank along the way 😉 It helped that they have also hired Regina Dugan (http://www.engadget.com/2013/05/29/motorolas-dennis-woodside-and-regina-dugan-live-from-d11/ ) from Google’s Advanced Technology, to lead a new team at the soon-to-be-built Building 8. Just what the former DARPA leader be doing there isn’t evident, but she tells Forbes that her group will rely on “ambitious R&D” to make “breakthrough” hardware that leans on Facebook’s technological skills. It’ll be in sync with the ambitious *10-year roadmap *Facebook unveiled at F8 on April 12th

VINE

Back-to-back Vines

On April 13th, Vine added a new way to watch Vine by playing back-to-back Vines, they said

“This update brings you a whole new way to watch Vine.

Our latest design introduces a “Watch” button that lets you kick back and see the story of a channel as Vines automatically play back to back.

People love to go through a channel or watch an account from start to finish. You can now do that with just the tap of a button, without having to manually scroll through individual posts. Check out Johnny McHone and Alona Forsythe for a couple examples.

When you’re on a user’s channel, you can tap “Posts” to choose how you want to view Vines: oldest to newest, newest to oldest, or by what’s popular. We recently introduced these options, and we recommend using them with this new viewing experience. Also, if you want to make a Vine loop as you’re watching, tap and hold it.

Get the update now on the App Store or Google Play.

After Pakistans bombing that killed 65 and injured 280 others, Facebook activated its Safety Check tool.  Safety Check automatically sends Facebook users in an affected area a note asking if they’re safe. When a user clicks on “yes, let my friends know,” the tool notifies their Facebook friends.  However, something didn’t work so well, because users thousands of miles away also received the notification.

Facebook issued an apology to affected users, after resolving the issue.  They said ”We activated Safety Check today in Lahore, Pakistan, after a bombing that took place there”  …  “Unfortunately, many people not affected by the crisis received a notification asking if they were okay. We worked to resolve the issue and we apologize to anyone who mistakenly received the notification.”

Facebook also activated the tool after terrorist bombings struck the airport and subway in Brussels, Belgium.

Facebook is testing a feature that lets you know when someone is trying to imitate you with a ‘impersonation alert’ system that detects when another user is impersonating your account by using your name and profile photo, in this scenario it will send an alert notifying you about the profile. You’ll then be prompted to identify if the profile in question is impersonating you by using your personal information, or if it belongs to someone else who is not impersonating you.

Microsoft’s researchers created a sort of teen chatbot, Tay.ai “by mining relevant public data and by using AI and editorial” that was developed by a staff “including improvisational comedians.”.  She was considered as an ‘innocent teen’ until she started listening to what people had to say on Twitter.

As the Telegraph reports, she managed, in a single tweet, to blame President Bush for 9/11, use racist language in praising Hitler over President Obama and contend that “donald trump is the only hope we’ve got.”

Also…

“I f***ing hate feminists and they should all die and burn in hell.”

And…

“F*** MY ROBOT P**** DADDY I’m SUCH A NAUGHTY ROBOT.”

A man from London (UK) who tweeted about accosting a Muslim woman in the street regarding this week’s terror attacks in Belgium has been arrested, the BBC reported Thursday.  The tweet, which went viral, read: “I confronted a Muslim woman yesterday in Croydon. I asked her to explain Brussels. She said ‘Nothing to do with me’. A mealy mouthed reply.”

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: “A 46-year-old man was arrested at his home address in Croydon on Wednesday, 23 March on suspicion of inciting racial hatred on social media. He was taken to a south London police station.”

The arrested man’s tweet quickly went viral, spawning dozens of parodies that riffed on subjects as diverse as Donald Trump and brussels sprouts.  One example: Telegraph reviews critic Robbie Collin tweeted: “I confronted a man who was eating a bowl of muesli yesterday in Croydon. He said “mmfflfffmufflrgh”. A mealy mouthed reply.”

The free internet services are accidentally opened the door to illegal file sharing in Angola.  Angolans have created ad hoc piracy networks by hiding files in Wikipedia pages (which they can access through Wikipedia Zero) and sharing links to them in private Facebook groups (available in Facebook’s Free Basics)

According to CNET, a new study from the University of Pittsburgh looked at the use of Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, Google Plus, Instagram, Snapchat, Reddit, Tumblr, Pinterest, Vine and LinkedIn by examining 1,787 adults between the ages of 19 and 32 and they concluded

Heavy users of social media are 1.7 to 2.7 times more likely to suffer from depression, than those of who check less frequently (reported as both 1.7 and 2.7).

Average social media use was 61 minutes per day

Average number of visits to a social media site was 30 a week.

Lead researcher Lui yi Lin said even though the link between one factor and the other seems strong, the deep truth behind the link may be complex. “It may be that people who already are depressed are turning to social media to fill a void,” she said on the University’s Web site. There’s also the possibility, she added, that social media might cause depression, which then causes more social media use.

Dr. Brian Primack, director of Pitt’s Center for Research on Media, Technology and Health insisted that not all social media interaction or usage is the same, he said “Future studies should examine whether there may be different risks for depression depending on whether the social media interactions people have tend to be more active vs. passive or whether they tend to be more confrontational vs. supportive”

Facebook Canvas …

Canvas is an immersive and expressive experience on Facebook for businesses to tell their stories and showcase their products

You can easily build your Canvas using a combination of videos, still images and call-to-action buttons. In Canvas, people can swipe through a carousel of images, tilt to view panoramic images and zoom in to view images in detail.

Canvas was built to bring your content to life in a fast-loading and seamless experience on Android and iOS. Leveraging the same technology used to display photos and videos quickly in the Facebook app, Canvas loads quickly, as much as 10 times faster than the standard mobile web.

Perhaps we should experiment and demonstrate what it can do ?!

WordPress blogs to support Facebook Instant Articles!  But wait – isn’t Instant Articles limited to a handful of publishers?  Yes, but from April 12th it will be unlocked to everyone, including Bloggers.

Given that WordPress powers more than 25% of websites on the web (wow) the plugin should enable Bloggers to attract a wider audience.  Part of the FB blog …

When Instant Articles opens up in April, publishers that use standard WordPress templates can activate the plugin out-of-the-box to create Instant Articles. Publishers that want a more customized production experience can extend the plugin to support additional elements. We encourage all interested publishers on WordPress to review the plugin’s documentation and FAQs.

The plugin is open source, and we encourage the community to participate in its development to help publishers of all types take full advantage of the fast, native experience of Instant Articles. If you have any feedback, you can send it as an Issue on GitHub. And if you write a compatibility layer for another popular plugin, we encourage you to share it with the WordPress community via a Pull Request.

Our goal from the beginning has been to make Instant Articles available to all publishers and our partnership with Automattic is another exciting step towards realizing that goal on April 12 at our F8 conference. We will continue to iterate the plugin over the coming weeks and look forward to collaborating with the WordPress community to improve the experience.

Facebook buys MSQRD (Masquerade)

The app can transform faces with cartoon graphics, make-up, animal features or accessories.  You can see the transformations live and optional record the video generated.

Snapchat have a cool face-swap feature, MSQRD doesn’t seem to have this yet.

Facebook tried to buy in 2013 for $3bn!!

David Wilkinson, managing partner at digital consultancy Soho Strategy said ”I think Facebook has realised Snapchat has something it doesn’t,”

“A lot of people share filtered selfie videos, so I think we can expect to see this integrated into Facebook’s Messenger platform.”

“Snapchat has its own USP as an ephemeral messaging platform, but for the novelty factor people might just use Facebook’s built-in filters.”

Facebook said “”Masquerade has great technology to help us bring even more creative tools to Facebook, and help extend this work to video”

Oculus has announced that it’s adding social features to the company’s VR platform

“Now you can experience games, videos, and more with friends in VR! Starting 10th March, people with a Samsung Gear VR, powered by Oculus, can create a profile and then easily search for others on the platform by real name or Oculus username.”

New Social Games Coming to Gear VR

The immersive sense of virtual reality is even more compelling with friends. Today we’re adding new, made-for-VR games to Gear VR that let you team up with friends or compete against people from all over the world.

We’ve also added the ability to create rooms with friends in Oculus Social. Now you can watch Twitch or Vimeo streams in a room with people you know.

Also, you can leave user reviews for all apps on the Oculus Store. We look forward to your feedback.

Discover Personalized Facebook Content in Oculus Video

Facebook is the best destination for discovering 360 videos from the people and public figures that matter to you. Now, we’re making it even easier to watch 360 content in VR.

We’ve added a new Facebook Videos tab to Oculus Video, and starting next week, you’ll be able to connect your Facebook account with Oculus Video to personalize your 360 video feed based on the pages and people you follow.

In the coming weeks, you’ll be able to like and share your favorite Facebook 360 videos from within VR.

Later this month, we’ll release new tools for developers that make it even easier to create more incredible social VR games and apps.

Virtual reality will continue to drive deeper social connections, and we can’t wait to bring it to more people around the world!

Facebook live video notifications might soon be customisable, so that you can turn them off, however they will still be promoted to the top of your feed.  Here’s what a Facebook spokesperson told Engadget in regards to Live Videos and notifications:

“We’ve heard from people that they don’t want to miss live videos from the people or Pages they care about, so we may send a notification if someone you’ve recently interacted with is going live, in case you want to tune in. One way you can currently control notifications for live videos is by clicking on the “Live Subscribe” button on top of the video to get notified when that person goes live again. You can also click on that same button as a way to turn off those specific notifications. However, we know people want more control over the live notifications they receive, so we’re working on improving this experience. We are starting to roll out a new setting that lets people turn off all live notifications, through their Notifications settings, that will be available to all people soon.”

Fed up with the standard Facebook Emoticons, then why not install Reaction Packs – it’s a browser extension that swaps out the regular Facebook reactions with Donald Trump goofy photos (link in the show notes).  Just bear in mind that it changes what you see, not who you send the message to.

Facebook Lite (Android exclusive) has hit 100 million users in the developing world.  The lite version of the App is 1MB instead of 42MB and everything about it has been designed to use as little bandwidth and processing as possible.

TWITTER / PERISCOPE

Last year Twitter launched Moments, which allowed you to receive Tweets around specific moments directly in your News Feed. Now, Twitter allows publishers to add links in moments. So, each time you see a news story in moments with a link, you can click that link, read the story and go back to continue watching the rest of the tweets on that specific moment.

Twitter adds Unity support (which is a gaming engine) to its mobile development toolkit, this likely will mean more mobile games with Twitter integration because it’ll be easier for developers to add crash reporting, mobile analytics and monetization tools to the development environment.

Managing your settings on LinkedIn is now easier than ever

Providing you with clarity and control when it comes to your experience on LinkedIn is a crucial part of our Members First philosophy. Today we’re excited to share that we are making “Privacy & Settings” even more convenient for you, with a streamlined hub to help you easily manage your LinkedIn account. It’s important to note that no settings have been taken away and no default or preferences have been changed – we’ve made sure all settings are in place and are easier to control.

What’s New

When you visit the new “Privacy & Settings” page, you’ll see we’ve redesigned the entire experience, starting with quick details about your account at the top and all settings categorized into three groups: Account, Privacy and Communications.

Account – includes things like adding email addresses, changing your password or language, and exporting your data.

Privacy – covers all privacy and security settings related to what can be seen about you, what information can be used, and making sure your account stays secure with a second factor of authentication.

Communications – houses your preferences for how LinkedIn and other members are able to contact you, and how frequently you’d like to hear from us.

We know that members enjoy connecting with colleagues and acquaintances in their networks. To make connecting easier, if a member has your email address or phone number in the contacts they upload to LinkedIn, we may suggest they connect with you. We’ve added new settings options that let you choose who can see you as a suggested connection when they have your contact info. As always, it’s up to you to decide how you want to grow your network, and which invitations you want to accept.

We’ll be rolling out this new experience to all members in the next few weeks. In the meantime, be sure to turn on two-step verification for added security and add a backup phone number so you never get locked out of your account.

GOOGLE / YOUTUBE

Google hires the creator of 4chan (Chris Poole, AKA Moot), Google might be wanting to take advantage his 12 years of experience building online communities and it’s likely he will be working on Google+ to improve its community and provide hooks to encourage people to stay engaged.

4chan? – apparently a message board where almost anything goes.

We mentioned last week about YouTube changing it’s takedown requests, well, Google had over 75 million takedown requests in February, that’s an equivalent of 100,000 links per hour.

This is more than double for the same time last year, this could be partly down to the MPAA, RIAA and other copyright-holders are now using algorithms that spot pirated content (often incorrectly) and automatically file takedown notices to Google.

SNAPCHAT

“I’ll be back” – or should that be “I’ve got your back” ?!

Arnold Schwarzenegger has been using Snapchat to endorse on of the four remaining Republicans (John Kasich) seeking their party’s nomination.

“I want John Kasich to be the next nominee of the Republicans and also to be the next president of the United States,” – https://twitter.com/ketch/status/706559922998218752

3 Easy Ways To Collaborate With Team Members

Whether you are a solopreneur or a have a large team, being organized is one of the keys to business.   Technology makes it easy to share ideas whether you are face to face or have co-workers spread across the globe.  We wanted to share with you three apps that can help you keep track of ideas and at the same time help you get work done more effectively.

TRELLO

Trello, is a product that we use here at Devology.  Trello is a system of that helps you organize your information into boards that can be shared by more than one person.  It is kind of like having a bunch of white boards where you can jot down ideas, plan strategies, and even add pictures.

trelloCheck out this video by the Trello team to see how it works.

Devology has used Trello to keep tasks and projects on track, to create lists, and to keep ideas grouped.

GOOGLE DRIVE

Google Drive is another weapon in the organization arsenal that is very effective.   Google Drive allows you to create documents that can be shared with others.  All you need is a Gmail address. Once you have granted permission for documents to be shared multiple people can be in a document at the same time and you can truly collaborate.   This is especially helpful for virtual teams and helps cut down on paper usage so you can help the environment at the same time!

SOCIAL SCHEDULER

We would be remiss if we didn’t mention our timesaving Social Scheduler app.  This tool allows users to schedule Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Pinterest posts.  A great way to keep your social media content up to date without the hassle of live posting.  Social Scheduler allows you to keep your message consistent across multiple platforms. You can check out it out free (no credit card required) for light use.  Click here to learn more.

We Want Your Feedback

We want our products and even this blog to help you.  If you have suggestions, comments, and we can even handle a little criticism please feel free to comment on the blog or email us at rob@devology.co.uk.
