FACEBOOK

Facebook Messenger will soon get a lot more crowded. There are more than 10,000 developers building bots for Facebook’s messaging platform, Messenger’s head of product said in an interview Tuesday.

http://mashable.com/2016/05/10/facebook-messenger-bots-developers

Facebook has relied on a small editorial team to decide what news topics to show. Facebook says the guidelines are old.

Justin Osofsky, Facebook vice president of global operations, said in a statement that Facebook relies on more than 1,000 sources of news

…to help verify and characterize world events and what people are talking about.” He adamantly denied claims that Facebook has been biased.

We have at no time sought to weight any one viewpoint over another, and in fact our guidelines are designed with the intent to make sure we do not do so,

The rest of his comment said:

The guidelines demonstrate that we have a series of checks and balances in place to help surface the most important popular stories, regardless of where they fall on the ideological spectrum. Facebook does not allow or advise our reviewers to systematically discriminate against sources of any political origin, period. What these guidelines show is that we’ve approached this responsibly and with the goal of creating a high-quality product — in the hopes of delivering a meaningful experience for the people who use our service.

Facebook 360-degree photos are coming to your news feed

Facebook introduced support for 360-degree videos in your Newsfeed in September, soon that will apply to photos too. You’ll be able to snap a panoramic photo sphere on your phone and then upload it to Facebook.

A person viewing your post can either tilt your phone around to get the full view, or drag it around with your finger or mouse cursor.

Facebook will also add a new photos section to the Oculus app so you can go ahead and strap your Gear VR on to get the full immersion. Eugene Wei, head of video for Oculus said

We’ve been beta-testing 360 photos internally for awhile now

It’s a lot of fun. You get to share where you are; the story of your life with other people.

Facebook – Extend the Reach of Video Ads through the Audience Network

Video is a powerful way for businesses to share their brand message. With its emotional draw, video can be uniquely compelling and personal, especially on mobile devices. And people are watching more and more of it—100 million hours of video are watched on Facebook every day.

1 Video viewing time on Instagram has increased by more than 40 percent in the last six months.

2 But Facebook and Instagram are only the beginning.

Advertisers want their videos to reach more of the right people in more places. That’s why today we’re extending Audience Network to include videos from advertisers looking to drive brand outcomes. Now, in addition to watching these videos on Facebook and Instagram, people will view them on the other apps and sites where they spend their time.

Introduced two years ago, the Audience Network is a collection of apps and sites that advertisers can use to extend the reach of their Facebook and Instagram ads. These third-party apps and sites have a wide reach and account for nearly six percent of time spent on US mobile.

3 The Audience Network has historically focused on direct response ads, both image and video, but now, it offers a solution that optimizes results for marketers focused on brand awareness and recall.

<SKIPPED IN THE PODCAST….>

Two formats for Audience Network videos

The Audience Network will deliver ads in both in-stream and in-article formats. The delivery in each channel will match viewers’ expectations of the site or app they’re on. In-stream video ads will play before, during or after (pre-roll, mid-roll or post-roll) video content on third party apps and sites across mobile and desktop. These sites include popular video publishers like USA Today Sports Media Group. In–article video ads will appear on mobile pages of publishers, such as Daily Mail, between paragraphs of text and play automatically when at least half the pixels are viewable. In this format, the viewer must opt-in for sound. In-article delivery will start with Instant Articles (articles that load immediately upon clicking from News Feed for a fast, immersive reading experience).

In-stream (desktop and mobile)

In-article (viewer must opt-in for sound)

Improve return on ad spend with more placement channels

With more places to deliver content, we can better maximize value for advertisers who want more brand exposure through video. Globally, advertisers that opt-in to the Audience Network can generate approximately 10% more incremental reach than using mobile News Feed alone.4 Plus, we increase our ability to show the most relevant ads to each viewer. If your targeted audience spends more time in a particular app than on Facebook or Instagram, your video will be shown in that app more often. Early tests indicate that advertisers gain lower cost per view by enabling all their videos to show on Facebook, Instagram and the Audience Network. This added value to both businesses and people aligns with our philosophy for building advertising solutions.

“Facebook’s Audience Network has allowed us to see cost effectiveness and extend the reach of our Facebook video view campaigns. The introduction of new video formats that support brand objectives—like video views—means more people can enjoy Jack in the Box video content on more apps and sites than ever before.”

— Rah Mahtani, Social Media Manager, Jack in the Box

Bring your brand awareness videos to the Audience Network

Facebook Advertisers can extend their brand video ads to the apps and websites in the Audience Network in the same way they do so for direct response video ads: by leaving “Audience Network” checked in the placement section when creating or editing their ad. This option will roll out to advertisers everywhere over the next few weeks. Since the ads run primarily on mobile, it’s important to create content with that in mind. Get tips on creating video for mobile.

Instagram launches a new logo

Instagram launches a new-look logo as it moves away from being a photo app.

Screen Shot 2016-05-17 at 12.43.17.png

Today we’re introducing a new look. You’ll see an updated icon and app design for Instagram. Inspired by the previous app icon, the new one represents a simpler camera and the rainbow lives on in gradient form. You’ll also see updated icons for our other creative apps: Layout, Boomerang and Hyperlapse.

We’ve made improvements to how the Instagram app looks on the inside as well. The simpler design puts more focus on your photos and videos without changing how you navigate the app.

The Instagram community has evolved over the past five years from a place to share filtered photos to so much more — a global community of interests sharing more than 80 million photos and videos every day. Our updated look reflects how vibrant and diverse your storytelling has become.

Thank you for giving this community its life and color. You make Instagram a place to discover the wonder in the world. Every photo and video — from the littlest things to the most epic — opens a window for people to broaden their experiences and connect in new ways.

WHATSAPP

Introducing WhatsApp’s desktop app

Today we’re introducing a desktop app so you have a new way to stay in touch anytime and anywhere – whether on your phone or computer at home or work. Like WhatsApp Web, our desktop app is simply an extension of your phone: the app mirrors conversations and messages from your mobile device.

The new desktop app is available for Windows 8+ and Mac OS 10.9+ and is synced with WhatsApp on your mobile device. Because the app runs natively on your desktop, you’ll have support for native desktop notifications, better keyboard shortcuts, and more.

To download the app, visit https://www.whatsapp.com/download from your desktop browser. Then, open the app and scan the QR code using the WhatsApp app on your phone (look for WhatsApp Web menu under Settings).

Just like WhatsApp Web, the new desktop app lets you message with friends and family while your phone stays in your pocket.

Twitter Omnisearch

Twitter is…

building a new information retrieval system called Omnisearch. Like databases, information retrieval systems match documents (e.g., Tweets or web pages) to users’ queries. However, unlike databases, the documents are usually ranked and may not exactly match the query. While the most common application of an information retrieval system is web search, their power and flexibility make them useful for many other products.

People come to Pinterest looking for new ideas to try, and the very best ideas come from businesses like yours. We understand that businesses and bloggers need a sustainable way to keep making great content. That’s why we’ve decided to allow affiliate links on Pinterest.

In the past, we removed affiliate links from Pinterest because spammers were abusing them. Now that our spam detection system is so much stronger, we’re ready to allow affiliate links again. To make way for these changes, we’re making minor updates to our acceptable use policy. We’ll start rolling out all affiliate networks today and over the coming weeks.

If you use affiliate links on your site, you don’t have to do anything differently—just keep on Pinning as usual.

Amazon Video Direct poses challenge to YouTube

As reported by the BBC

Online retail giant Amazon has launched an online video service to rival Google’s YouTube.

Amazon Video Direct will allow users to post videos and earn royalties.

Viewers can rent and buy content or watch it for free with adverts. An ad-free version is offered to Amazon Prime members – a subscription service with other benefits.

Initially, videos will be viewable in the US, Germany, Austria, Japan and the UK.

The firm already offers access to professional TV shows and films via Prime Video, a rival to Netflix.

It also streams user-generated clips about video games via Twitch.

“There are more options for distribution than ever before and with Amazon Video Direct, for the first time, there’s a self-service option for video providers to get their content into a premium streaming subscription service,” said Jim Freeman, Vice President of Amazon Video

“We’re excited to make it even easier for content creators to find an audience, and for that audience to find great content.”

The news comes barely a month after online talent firm Fullscreen launched its own subscription video platform.

Previously the firm had published content on free platforms like YouTube, Instagram and Snapchat.

YouTube offers an ad-free subscription service of its own – YouTube Red – which costs $10 per month.

Google Introducing Spaces, a tool for small group sharing

Group sharing isn’t easy. From book clubs to house hunts to weekend trips and more, getting friends into the same app can be challenging. Sharing things typically involves hopping between apps to copy and paste links. Group conversations often don’t stay on topic, and things get lost in endless threads that you can’t easily get back to when you need them.

We wanted to build a better group sharing experience, so we made a new app called Spaces that lets people get people together instantly to share around any topic.

With Spaces, it’s simple to find and share articles, videos and images without leaving the app, since Google Search, YouTube, and Chrome come built in.

Screen Shot 2016-05-17 at 12.49.47.png

When someone shares something new to a space, the conversational view lets you see what the group is talking about without missing a beat.

Screen Shot 2016-05-17 at 12.49.52.png

And if you ever want to find something that was shared earlier—articles, videos, comments or even images—a quick search lets you pull it up in a snap.

Screen Shot 2016-05-17 at 12.49.57.png

You can create a space with just one tap for any topic and invite anyone via messaging, email, a social network, or whatever way you like.

We’ll also be experimenting with Spaces this week at Google I/O. We’ve created a space for each session so that developers can connect with each other and Googlers around topics at I/O, and we’ve got a few surprises too. If you’re joining us in person at I/O, make sure you install Spaces on Android or iOS before you arrive!

Spaces is rolling out today on Android, iOS, desktop, and mobile web for all Gmail accounts. Give it a try and create your first space today.

YouTube cardboard

YouTube has updated its iOS app to introduce Cardboard support, so you can watch any clip (not just virtual reality videos) using your iPhone and a low-cost paper box. You’ve already had 360-degree video support before, but this is a big deal if you’d rather not swipe the screen to view footage from every conceivable angle… or if you’d just like to immerse yourself in 2D

YouTube for iOS now works with Google’s Cardboard headset

Coming Soon: Broadcast Search, Drones and Save Beyond 24 Hours

Everyday, our community creates amazing broadcasts — whether visiting a new place, performing a song, or sparking a passionate discussion. In the coming weeks, we’re launching broadcast search and drone support to help people form communities around the topics they care about and broadcast from new perspectives. We also want to share a preview of our full beyond 24 hours approach that will be available in the coming weeks.

In the coming weeks, you’ll be able to search for broadcasts by title or topic. When you tap on the search button in the Global List, you’ll see a list of suggested topics to search for, including #Travel, #Music, #Food and more. To broadcast about a topic, simply tap the Broadcast button in the topic’s search results to add the relevant hashtag, or add the hashtag to your title directly.

We’re also testing two special topics that you can search for. In “First Scope,” you can welcome new broadcasters to our community. In “GoPros and Drones,” you can find broadcasts from GoPros and, for the first time, drones!

A New Perspective with Drones

To broadcast from a supported DJI drone, just connect your iPhone to your drone’s remote. We’ll automatically pull in your drone’s video feed and let you switch between it, your iPhone cameras and even your GoPro. During your broadcast, you can narrate from a bird’s eye view using your phone or even Sketch on the broadcast to highlight different sights:

Watch Zagat’s drone broadcast from a New York farm.

Anyone with an iPhone and a supported DJI drone will be able to start broadcasting in the coming weeks.

Save Your Broadcasts Beyond 24 Hours

Last week, we introduced a public beta for you to add #save to your broadcasts to keep them beyond 24 hours. Today, we want to give you a preview of the full solution that we’re launching in the next few weeks.

Follow Saki and her saved broadcasts around Japan

Our goal is to give you full control of your broadcasts. Soon, your broadcasts will be automatically saved on Periscope and Twitter with comments and hearts. Should you change your mind, you can still delete your broadcasts at any time in the post-broadcast screen or in your profile. And, for those of you who still want your broadcasts to be removed after 24 hours, you can easily configure that in your account settings.

We hope these updates will make it easier for you to find broadcasts and communities that you care about. To learn more, visit our Help Center for search and drone broadcasts.

Much love,

Team Periscope

YouTube making it easier for advertisers to jump onto viral videos via Google Preferred

Tonight [Thursday, May 5, 2016], YouTube hosted our fifth annual Brandcast in New York, our digital Newfronts event, where we showcase the best of YouTube to advertisers and agencies. With a little help from Big Bird, the Whip Nae Nae, and Sia, we showed that YouTube is where the world chooses to watch: on mobile alone, we now reach more 18-49 year-olds in the U.S. than any broadcast or cable TV network.1

As a result, our influence is greater than ever. In fact, nearly 60 percent of YouTube subscribers say they’d follow a YouTube creator’s advice on what to buy over that of their favorite TV or movie star. And the influence of YouTube stars continues to grow—last year, 6 in 10 of the most influential celebrities among teens were YouTubers, and this year that number jumped to 8 in 10.

To help brands capture some of this momentum, we have a premium content offering called Google Preferred that features creators like Lilly Singh, sWooZie and Laura Vitale. Organized into 13 lineup categories—including Comedy, Music, and Food & Recipes—Google Preferred is easy to buy and gives advertisers access to the most-loved and most-watched content on YouTube. In fact, Google Preferred reaches more people in the U.S. on mobile than all full episode players combined.2 And, we announced at Brandcast that Google Preferred just got better. Here’s how:

1. More Can’t-Miss Moments With Google Preferred Breakout Videos

Pop culture moments like the Harlem Shake and Let It Go are as unexpected as they are popular. While Google Preferred gives brands access to established creator channels, our new Breakout Videos offering lets them advertise on emerging content—the hottest and fastest-rising videos on YouTube. With the launch of Google Preferred Breakout Videos in the U.S., brands can be there alongside the next breakout star.

2. More Ease and Relevance with Programmatic Guaranteed for Google Preferred

To make it even easier to be there in the moment viewers are watching, upfront buyers will soon be able to execute their Google Preferred—and Breakout Videos—buy programmatically through DoubleClick Bid Manager. This means all video campaigns (including TrueView, Google Preferred, and cross-exchange) can be managed in one place.

3. More Sports Fans With NBA Highlights on Google Preferred

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver also took to the Brandcast stage to announce that NBA inventory is now part of Google Preferred. Top NBA highlights will surface in Google Search and on YouTube, offering brands access to the NBA’s loyal fan base across screens. In addition, the NBA will soon launch two new VR series on YouTube that give viewers a behind-the-scenes look at team arenas and their favorite players.

4. More Great Results for Brands

With new additions like Breakout Videos, Programmatic Guaranteed, and NBA highlights, Google Preferred will keep delivering massive reach, and strong results for brands.

Already this year, among the Google Preferred campaigns we measured, 75 percent drove lifts in consideration3 and 61 percent drove lifts in favorability.4 Google Preferred is driving results later in the consumer journey, too: it raised purchase intent in two-thirds of campaigns.5

Results like these have encouraged nearly twice the number of brands in the U.S. to take advantage of Google Preferred in the last year.6

Chime in with your Google Preferred questions and comments on #Brandcast, and check out six questions every brand should consider after Brandcast. We’ll post even more content after the show on the Brandcast website.

FACEBOOK

…The Court accepts as true plaintiffs’ allegations that Facebook’s face recognition technology involves a scan of face geometry that was done without plaintiffs’ consent,” U.S. District Judge James Donato wrote in his ruling…

http://www.engadget.com/2016/05/06/facebook-lawsuit-privacy-photo-tagging-software/

http://www.cnet.com/news/facebook-denies-biased-trends-allegations

http://www.cnet.com/news/facebooks-trending-news-feed-may-be-a-sham/

The world’s largest social network calls out the top trending stories on its site, which is visited by more than a billion people every day. But the list may be manipulated by Facebook’s employees, who are allegedly deciding what’s “trending” based on their political views.

Facebook’s trending topics list … may have become a tool for employees to wield their political opinions

However Tom Stocky from Facebook have responded on their Blog

My team is responsible for Trending Topics, and I want to address today’s reports alleging that Facebook contractors manipulated Trending Topics to suppress stories of interest to conservatives. We take these reports extremely seriously, and have found no evidence that the anonymous allegations are true.

Facebook is a platform for people and perspectives from across the political spectrum. There are rigorous guidelines in place for the review team to ensure consistency and neutrality. These guidelines do not permit the suppression of political perspectives. Nor do they permit the prioritization of one viewpoint over another or one news outlet over another. These guidelines do not prohibit any news outlet from appearing in Trending Topics.

Trending Topics is designed to showcase the current conversation happening on Facebook. Popular topics are first surfaced by an algorithm, then audited by review team members to confirm that the topics are in fact trending news in the real world and not, for example, similar-sounding topics or misnomers.

We are proud that, in 2015, the US election was the most talked-about subject on Facebook, and we want to encourage that robust political discussion from all sides. We have in place strict guidelines for our trending topic reviewers as they audit topics surfaced algorithmically: reviewers are required to accept topics that reflect real world events, and are instructed to disregard junk or duplicate topics, hoaxes, or subjects with insufficient sources. Facebook does not allow or advise our reviewers to systematically discriminate against sources of any ideological origin and we’ve designed our tools to make that technically not feasible. At the same time, our reviewers’ actions are logged and reviewed, and violating our guidelines is a fireable offense.

There have been other anonymous allegations — for instance that we artificially forced ‪#‎BlackLivesMatter‬ to trend. We looked into that charge and found that it is untrue. We do not insert stories artificially into trending topics, and do not instruct our reviewers to do so. Our guidelines do permit reviewers to take steps to make topics more coherent, such as combining related topics into a single event (such as ‪#‎starwars‬ and ‪#‎maythefourthbewithyou‬), to deliver a more integrated experience.

Our review guidelines for Trending Topics are under constant review, and we will continue to look for improvements. We will also keep looking into any questions about Trending Topics to ensure that people are matched with the stories that are predicted to be the most interesting to them, and to be sure that our methods are as neutral and effective as possible.

It’s looking great – you’ll have to take our word for it though, we will show you when it’s done, then you can expect feature-after-feature to suddenly appear in short order afterwards.

Mobile app – Android notifications are being integrated to a clients project, then we intend to add it to Social Scheduler.

Talking of client work, we seem to have attracted a lot of interst recently and we are booked solid for a few months – this is good and bad. The good is that it funds the development of Social Scheduler without us getting worried about income, it’s bad in the sense we have less development time available to Social Scheduler.

Facebook dedicated apps for camera and live video!

Apparently, Facebook are wokring on a standalone camera app with the aim of helping you create and share more content. Wall Street Journal (WSJ’s) sources indicate that app has two prominent features: still photos and the ability to broadcast live video footage quickly.

WSJ’s sources also say that there’s a chance this new app will never be released, but the move would make sense for Facebook, especially if sharing really is on the decline.

TWITTER / PERISCOPE

Twitter is still struggling to make profit and this probably explains why Robs shares have drop £400 in value! They have 310 million subscribers but made a loss this quarter of $79 Million.

Twitter turned over $594.5 million this quarter, less than expected. Twitter noted that its revenue was on the low-end of expectations. The good news is that Twitter is closing in on profitability in comparison to this time last year.

Twitter enable you to flag multiple abusive tweets in one report

We want everyone on Twitter to feel safe expressing themselves. Behavior that crosses the line into abuse is against our rules and we want it to be easy for you to report it to us. So, today we’re introducing an improvement to our reporting process: the ability to attach multiple Tweets to a single report.

This update makes it easier for you to provide us with more information about the extent of abuse and reduces the time it takes to do so. That added context often helps us investigate issues and get them resolved faster.

Safety continues to be a top priority at Twitter. We have more improvements coming that will give you even more control over your experience and look forward to sharing those updates soon. For more information on our current tools, policies, and processes, head over to our safety center.

We’re beginning to roll out this change on iOS, Android, and on twitter.com, and expect all users worldwide to get access to the feature in the coming weeks.

Jelly (Twitter co-founder)

On April 29th, Biz Stones Jelly App has been relaunched, it’s labelled as a ‘New search engine’.

In his blog post he says

<img data-position=”3″ src=”https://devologyltd.files.wordpress.com/2016/05/jelly.png” data-mce-src=”Jelly.png”

Jelly is the only search engine in the world with an attitude, an opinion, and the experience of people to back it all up. Only Jelly can say you asked the wrong question. Only Jelly can give you answers you wanted but didn’t think to ask. Only Jelly will deliver a thoughtful answer to your anonymous question. This is all because Jelly is humanity plus technology.

How We Got Here

Ten years ago, the world was going mobile. A small team created a simple tool to harness this potential in a productive way. As a co-founder of Twitter, I helped build a new form of communication that amplified humanity’s ability to spread ideas, self-organize, and do amazing things. Jelly is an extension of that same thinking — amplifying humanity with software.

Technology is superior when humanity is woven into its DNA. I’m newly fond of saying, “Everyone is working on Artificial Intelligence, what about just, Intelligence?” Jelly sprung from the question, “What would search look like if it were created today?” We knew mobility and good old, human experience would be defining factors.

Ask Jelly and we’ll let you know when you have your answer.

Your Time is Your Life

Less time flipping through results means more time having hot chocolate with Jake.

It takes seconds to enter a question into a search engine. Web search prides itself in providing hundreds of millions of potentially relevant documents in fractions of a second. Then you spend your time researching those results to come up with something that satisfies. Getting to a real answer may take a few seconds, it may take several minutes—that time adds up.

The average person likely has several if not a dozen or more ordinary questions every day. Think about the time you spend “searching” each day. Those minutes easily turn into hours. Jelly gives you your time back. Enter your question, then return to your life. In its early phase, it may take minutes for Jelly to get you an answer, but Jelly is doing the work.

Technology Plus Humanity

We confess, we’re using a bit of AI. Yes, we’ve developed a routing algorithm. Each query and every answer is freighted with metadata. But all this science is in service of getting you the right responses from the right folks. People who can help because they’ve been there, they have the experience, they have the opinion, and most importantly, they have the answers you need — and you can follow up with them too.

People choose topics in which they have experience and opinion—they answer your questions.

The People Who Power Jelly

We all have an instinct to help. If we pass a driver broken down on the road, our first thought is to help. When friction is removed between wanting to help and helping, people help — especially when it’s something they already know. Studies have shown that helping others releases the same brain chemical as winning money. Our incentive to help is wired in.

There’s no account needed to ask a question on Jelly. You are encouraged to create an account if you would like to answer questions in certain topics or otherwise engage with people on Jelly through commenting, saving good questions, sharing, and other interactive features we’ve built so far, and will continue building. Setting up an account is free and easy.

Jelly Is Officially “Out There”

Jelly has been in a “closed beta” for a while. That means people have been testing it out while we’ve been building it, finding bugs, and being very patient with us. Today, you can download on the App Store or use on the Web. We still have more to build (and possibly some quirks). It’s more important to get Jelly into the hands of people, than try to perfect it.

Get for free!

This release is the beginning. We believe strongly that big changes are coming to the way people interact with technology. Getting answers to questions is, and always has been, central to living our lives. Jelly takes out the middleman—results—and answers questions directly. Technology should get out of your way so you can decide how to live your life.

TalkShow (Co-founded by former Twitter exec Michael Sippey,)

Talkshow is texting in public.

People text amazing things.

Talkshow is a simple messaging app that allows you to text these things in public. With Talkshow, individuals, groups of friends, entertainers, creators — anyone! — can have conversations in public, to be viewed by others in real time or after the fact. Every Talkshow can be shared outside the app and embedded into other websites.

Talkshow is available today for iPhone and iPad and we can’t wait for people to download it and start hosting their own Talkshows.

Why Talkshow?

Conversations are how we entertain each other and advance ideas, and messaging is how most of us have conversations today. We believe a fast, simple and uncluttered conversation between friends can be entertaining and enlightening for more than just the people talking. So, Talkshow is about turning messaging into media. That’s why we call it “texting in public.”

Taylor and Ed. https://www.instagram.com/p/2QHgzkDvMM/

People have been screenshotting texts and posting them on the web for years, but it was this Instagram pic Taylor Swift posted of a conversation with Ed Sheeran that pushed me toward Talkshow. This little exchange is funny, it’s personal, and even though Tay and Ed are multi-platinum superstars, their conversation is relatable. Why? Because everybody texts! And everybody texts about everything: sports, TV, politics, Beyonce’s Lemonade, Damn Daniel, or what they’re eating for dinner. I wanted to create Talkshow to give people a platform to share these conversations in front of an audience.

How does Talkshow work?

Talkshow is a messaging app (available for iPhone and iPad) that lets people have conversations with their friends in public.

Some screenshots of Talkshow.

When you download the app and register, you can find friends on the app via Twitter, Facebook and/or your address book and start following them to find out when they’re hosting shows. You can also invite your friends to co-host shows with you.

Starting a show is as easy as sending a message — just pick your co-host(s) and choose a title for the show. They will get a push notification letting them know they’ve been invited to co-host your Talkshow, and then it’s show time. It’s easy to share pics and GIFs in shows and use third party keyboards to post stickers if that’s your thing.

Audiences can discover shows from the home screen of the app (we’ll be featuring great shows to bump them up to the top). As they watch they can like individual messages, share reactions and even send a request to become a co-host.

Friends and fans of people hosting shows don’t even have to have the app to tune in — every show has a permalink home on the web, and can easily be shared via email, SMS, Twitter or Facebook. And on desktop web, you can grab an embed code and put your Talkshow wherever you like. For example, here’s a great show from this weekend about the Warriors game:

Game 4 Talkshow: https://talkshow.im/show/NwH18okLRamgAWiP/

Go start your own Talkshow

We’ve been beta testing for a few months with a small group of people from different backgrounds. Now we’re opening the app up to everyone, and we can’t wait to tune into more conversations from a wide variety of people and voices.

Head to the App Store to download the app and start texting in public. Questions, comments, feedback? Hit us up on Twitter, Facebook or email us at hello@talkshow.im and we’ll get back to you as soon as we can. Want to read more? Check out our FAQ here.

See you on Talkshow!

Twitters new ‘Connect’ feature

Twitter says it’s built a feature that will recommend accounts based on who you follow already, your tweets, what’s popular around you and what’s happening in the world.

Twitter connects you with the people you’re interested in —whether that’s someone across the world who shares your love for science-fiction, your friends and family, a politician, or your local sports team (go Warriors!). However, finding new accounts to follow used to require jumping through a few hoops and a dash of luck. That’s why we’ve reimagined the experience with our new Connect tab. Starting today, you’ll see a detailed list of people and accounts we think you’ll enjoy following, all easily accessible in one place.

To give you the best recommendations — which we’ll continue to refine over time — we look at who you already follow, Tweets you like, popular accounts in your local area, what’s happening in the world right now, and more. We’ll also let you know exactly why we’re showing you each recommendation.

The Connect tab also makes it easier to connect with your friends and family by giving you the option to automatically sync your address book. And if someone in your address book joins Twitter, we’ll let you know so you can give them a warm welcome.

We’re thrilled to get this new feature into your hands and help you connect with even more people that are relevant to you. The Connect tab is rolling out today to everyone on Twitter for iOS and Android. To check it out, update your app and you’ll see a little blue prompt introducing the Connect tab when it’s available for you.

Youtube – Loss of monetization during the Content ID dispute process

At YouTube, one of our core values is a belief in the freedom of opportunity. We believe anyone should have the opportunity to earn money from the videos they create and turn their channels into successful businesses. That’s why we opened up the YouTube Partner Program nine years ago and why we remain the only platform where anyone with an idea and a camera can turn their videos into full time jobs.

We understand just how important revenue is to our creator community, and we’ve been listening closely to concerns about the loss of monetization during the Content ID dispute process. Currently videos that are claimed and disputed don’t earn revenue for anyone, which is an especially frustrating experience for creators if that claim ends up being incorrect while a video racks up views in its first few days.

Today, we’re announcing a major step to help fix that frustrating experience. We’re developing a new solution that will allow videos to earn revenue while a Content ID claim is being disputed. Here’s how it will work: when both a creator and someone making a claim choose to monetize a video, we will continue to run ads on that video and hold the resulting revenue separately. Once the Content ID claim or dispute is resolved, we’ll pay out that revenue to the appropriate party.

We’re working on this new system now and hope to roll it out to all YouTube partners in the coming months. Here’s a closer look at how it’ll work once it’s live:

We strongly believe in fair use and believe that this improvement to Content ID will make a real difference. In addition to our work on the Content ID dispute process, we’re also paying close attention to creators’ concerns about copyright claims on videos they believe may be fair use. We want to help both the YouTube community and copyright owners alike better understand what fair use looks like online, which is why we launched our fair use protection program last year and recently introduced new Help Center pages on this topic.

Even though Content ID claims are disputed less than 1% of the time, we agree that this process could be better. Making sure our Content ID tools are being used properly is deeply important to us, so we’ve built a dedicated team to monitor this. Using a combination of algorithms and manual review, this team has resolved millions of invalid claims in the last year alone, and acted on millions more before they impacted creators. The team also restricts feature access and even terminates a partner’s access to Content ID tools if we find they are repeatedly abusing these tools.

We will continue to invest in both people and technology to make sure that Content ID keeps working for creators and rightsholders. We want to thank everyone who’s shared their concerns about unintended effects from Content ID claims. It’s allowed us to create a better system for everyone and we hope to share more updates soon.

YouTube – mobile home page redesign has better recommendations.

Tuesday, April 26, 2016

Whether you want to watch hilarious sketch comedy, your favorite vlogger, new let’s plays, or music videos, you should be able to see new videos you love every time you visit YouTube—right on your homepage. Starting today, when you open the YouTube app on your iPhone or Android phone, you’ll experience a redesigned Home, with a clean and simple format that invites you to discover and enjoy.

<img data-position=”3″ src=”https://devologyltd.files.wordpress.com/2016/05/000a49cc-d997-43eb-90bb-ec3cbc6335db.png” data-mce-src=”000A49CC-D997-43EB-90BB-EC3CBC6335DB.png”

Large, high resolution images make it easy to identify videos you want to watch, and a prominent icon highlights the creator for every video

This isn’t just a new coat of paint on the same old Home—we’ve coupled a fresh design with more relevant personalized recommendations that make it easier to discover videos you’ll be excited to watch. The new recommendation system is based on deep neural network technology, which means it can find patterns automatically and keep learning and improving as it goes. Every day, we recommend hundreds of millions of different videos on Home, billions of times, in 76 languages.

One of the biggest improvements is how the system suggests more recent videos and those from the creators you love. People who have tried the new system have spent more time watching fresh videos and content from their Subscriptions.

We hope you’ll enjoy your new Home, built just for you!

YouTube introduce Bump Ads

Built for mobile: Bumper ads drive incremental reach and frequency, particularly on smartphones

Tuesday, April 26, 2016

Recent research has shown that half of 18-49 year olds turn to their mobile device first to watch video. Even in the living room, many people prefer to watch on their smartphone – for the control, personalization and ease it offers. And as viewing habits change, we are working to introduce new formats adapted to these habits.

That’s why today we’re announcing Bumper ads – a new six-second video format, sold through the AdWords auction on a CPM basis. Bumper ads are ideal for driving incremental reach and frequency, especially on mobile, where “snackable videos” perform well.

Given the succinct nature of the format, we’ve seen Bumper ads work best when combined with a TrueView or Google Preferred campaign. In early tests, Bumpers drove strong lift in upper funnel metrics like recall, awareness and consideration. We also see that Bumpers work well to drive incremental reach and frequency when paired with a TrueView campaign.

Atlantic Records was an early tester of this new format, using Bumpers to launch English band Rudimental’s second album. As Fiona Byers, Senior Marketing Manager of Atlantic Records/Warner Music Group said, “TrueView and Bumpers were a really important part of the recent Rudimental campaign to tell the story of the band’s second album. Through cost-efficient bumpers we could really showcase the plethora of legendary guests featured on the record. They each gave a short sharp insight into a featured artist and individual track on the album, with TrueView providing the fuller story around the album and the band. When used in conjunction, TrueView plus Bumpers really work more effectively than either format on its own.”

As a quick and fun format, Bumpers lend themselves well to serialized content. Audi Germany cut up their longer TrueView ad to introduce their Q-series SUVs with evocative German “q” words like querpass (cross kick) and quantensprung (quantum leap). Their early adoption of the format mirrors Audi Germany’s tagline “Vorsprung durch Technik” (“advantage through technology”).

We like to think of Bumper ads as little haikus of video ads – and we’re excited to see what the creative community will do with them. You can use Bumpers beginning in May by talking to your Google sales representative, and stay tuned as we continue to roll out new ad formats that are uniquely adapted to the way people watch video now, and in the future.

YouTube TV – as early as next year

CNET say that Bloomberg news are reporting that YouTube is finalizing deals with Broadcast TV and cable channels (that is NBCUniversal, Viacom, Twenty-First Century Fox, and CBS), to launch a paid-for TV service, called ‘UnPlugged’ over the internet, in 2017.

The expected cost is less than $35 a month.

YouTube will reportedly start streaming live TV in 2017

Google Hangouts – direct peer-ot-peer connection

To improve audio and video quality, Hangouts calls use a direct peer-to-peer connection when possible. This allows Hangouts to connect your call directly to the person you’re talking to, rather than routing the call through one of Google’s servers.

When does Hangouts use peer-to-peer calling?

Every Hangouts call starts with all participants connecting to a Google server. The audio and video are then relayed to the people in the call. When there are only two participants in the call, Hangouts may attempt to establish a peer-to-peer connection between them. If the peer-to-peer connection isn’t possible, the Hangout will continue to send and receive audio and video using the existing connection to Google.

This feature will be available for participants on Google Apps with the latest Hangouts apps for iPhone/iPad and Android. We hope to bring this functionality to other devices in the future.

How does peer-to-peer calling help me?

Peer-to-peer connections improve almost all two-participant Hangouts calls. Routing audio and video through a Google server means that your call with a family member in the next town, or your colleague in the other building, could end up traveling farther than needed. Instead, a peer-to-peer connection allows the audio and video to be sent directly, allowing for the best possible quality.

Does Hangouts use peer-to-peer calling for a Hangout with more than two participants?

Peer-to-peer connections are used only for calls with two participants. If any additional participants join, Hangouts will immediately go back to sending and receiving data using the connection to the Google server.

How does peer-to-peer calling impact my personal information?

In order to create a peer-to-peer connection, it is necessary for Google to make the IP address of each participant available to the other. (The IP address is like a phone number; in order for the two devices to speak to each other, they need to know how to contact each other.) Though this happens in the background, it may be possible for a highly motivated and technically proficient person to discover the participants’ IP addresses, which can be used to approximate location. This discovery can happen only during the call.

How does peer-to-peer calling work in an organization?

For organizations with internal networks, a peer-to-peer call where both parties are on the network would take place primarily within the network. If one participant is on the network and the other isn’t, the IP address visible to the other participant is likely to be the IP address of the organization’s gateway, rather than any specific internal network address (this depends on the individual network configuration). This is the same IP address that is displayed when a member of the organization visits a public website. From this perspective, Hangouts operates in the same way as most other Internet-enabled applications.

If you like including animated gifs, then maybe Giphy Keys for iOS will be a good solution for you, it includes a keyboard too, so you don’t have to swap between a GIF picker and back to your keyboard. I think that this is for SMS messaging, but I’m not sure from the description whether this is nicely integrated with applications like Twitter, where you would usually upload an animated gif separately or through their own GIF search.

Messenger group calling

Messenger enables people around the world to communicate with their loved ones, and millions of people use group chats in Messenger to stay in touch. But there are situations where typing isn’t enough and when people prefer talking to one another. For catching up with colleagues or family, making collaborative plans, and hearing your loved ones’ voices, Messenger already offers voice calling from one person to another.

Today we’re introducing group calling for Messenger. With group calling, you can now talk to more than one person at a time, in a group call. To get started, open one of your Messenger group conversations and tap the audio call button. Tapping the button lets you choose the list of people from the group to call. All the group members you choose are called simultaneously.

When you receive a group call, the experience is similar to receiving a call from one person, except that the screen will show the group name (if there is one) and the list of members. You can accept the incoming group call, ignore it or decline it.

If you are a member of a group with a call in progress, you can join the group call by opening the group conversation and tapping on the audio call button. While in a group call, you can see whether group members are in the call or not, and you can call anyone who’s not there yet.

Tapping the red ‘end call’ button on the screen enables you to leave the group call. The other participants will hear an exit tone. And when the second to last person leaves a group call, the call ends.

Give group calls on Messenger a try, and let us know what you think!

Facebook was hacked, via a back door

Because it’s a slow-news week…

Devcore’s Orange Tsai recently discovered that someone had installed a backdoor on one of Facebook’s corporate servers, used for internal emails and such-like. It was a file transfer app that had several vulnerabilities that gave any potential intruder free rein.

Tsai reported the bugs to Facebook as part of their bounty program and waited for Facebook to fix it prior to disclosing the flaw.

If anything it’s a wakeup call to Facebook that they are just as vulnerable as everyone else. It should be a wake up call to you too – if a company worth 317.54 Billion is vulnerable, what’s your chances!

Facebook ranks articles whilst you read them

With Instant Articles Facebook already analyzes how long you spend reading stories while you’re still in the app. Now, it will also measure how long you spend on an article after you click away from the News Feed, without counting the load times.

Facebook say that this to “better understand which articles might be interesting to you based on how long you and others read them, so you’ll be more likely to see stories you’re interested in.”

Make money on Facebook

Facebook performed a survey askingpeople if they would be interested in various options for making money or promoting a cause using their “personal presence” on the site.

Options include a digital tip jar, branded content, a sponsor marketplace, revenue sharing, a call-to-action button or a donate option for charities.

Facebook Messenger now makes it easier to share your Dropbox files, specifically photos, animated gifs and videos, on iOS and Android.

Stan Chudnovsky, head of product for Messenger said in a statement…

“We want people to communicate just the way they want to on Messenger, with everyone they care about,”

“Giving our users the ability to share their Dropbox videos and images in Messenger threads with just a few taps will help them bring more style and personality to those conversations.”

How does it work? Now, when you tap the More button in Messenger for iOS or Android, you’ll see Dropbox as an available source. With the Dropbox app installed on your phone, you can share any file in your Dropbox without having to leave the Messenger app.

Videos and images—including animated GIFs—will be displayed directly in your chats. For everything else, tapping Open will bring recipients to the Dropbox mobile app, where they can preview and save files. It’s a quick, simple way to share vacation snapshots, home movies, and laugh-worthy memes with any of the 900 million people using Messenger—whether they’re Facebook friends or not.

There’s a new tagging feature that must be used by anyone posting something tied to a marketer. The tag will alert the company being referenced so that they can view analytics, share and boost the post.

The original post from the “influencer” will get a “with” tag just like you see when you tag friends in updates.

Facebook is banning “overly promotional” content like “persistent watermarks” and pre-roll ads in any sponsored videos. It also won’t allow products, brands or sponsors to be used in profile pictures or cover photos. However, things like product placement and logos are allowed.

Facebook says that the features will soon extend to its live video push as well.

Facebook improved the ways that you discover live video

Yesterday, we announced new features for Facebook Live. We’re always working to improve Facebook Search to help you find out what the world is saying right now about the latest news and popular topics. So, we’ve updated Search with more ways to discover Live video.

Live Video in Trending Topics

It’s now easier to discover Live video in topics that are Trending on Facebook. If relevant Live video is available, it will be included in the Search results pages for these topics so you can get a direct, first-hand look at what’s happening.

live_in_trending.png

You’ll also see a new indicator that lets you know when relevant Live video is available for a Trending topic.

image-8.png

Expect to find Live video in a small handful of Trending topics for now. As more people start creating and sharing Live video, we’re excited to see these perspectives make Trending topics an even better experience.

Video Search

Our team built a dedicated search experience for the new Live video destination that’s coming to Facebook’s mobile app. Here, you can easily find even more videos across Facebook—just type a few keywords into the search bar at the top of the screen to discover all sorts of videos about things that matter to you, from chefs sharing their recipes to scientists explaining their breakthroughs to comedians trying out new jokes.

As always, you can only see videos that have been shared with you.

These updates are another way Search connects you with the unique, authentic public stories and conversations happening on Facebook. We look forward to your feedback.

Facebook have made it easier to find your friends

Say Hello to Messenger Codes:

Find the 900 million people who use Messenger every month more easily thanks to Usernames, Links and Messenger Codes.

At Messenger, we always aim to make life simpler, fun and more delightful. Starting today we are taking another step forward in delivering a new solution to the more than 900 million people who use Messenger every month. Phone numbers aren’t necessary, and you don’t have to be friends on Facebook.

Since traditional phone books are almost obsolete, we’re making it easier for you to find the people (and businesses) that matter to you and be able to start conversations immediately with the launch of a simple set of tools that are built for the modern world – Messenger Codes, Messenger Usernames, and Messenger Links. We’re starting to roll these tools out today. Here’s how they work:

Messenger Codes are the best way to find people in Messenger, whether you’re standing side-by-side or looking at your computer screen. No matter where you are – online or at an event – all you have to do is scan a code someone shares with you, and then you can start that important conversation. No more back and forth with texts trying to make sure you have the right number saved and awkwardly asking people how to spell their names. Your settings tab in Messenger has your own Messenger Code displayed prominently to scan or share.

We also took special care to make Messenger Codes as beautifully designed as possible so you can use them everywhere – on business cards, online, or in-store and anywhere else you like.

Messenger Links and Usernames are your very own personalized links that you can share anywhere online – from your email signature to a website – so people can reach you quickly on Messenger. You can send your Messenger Link directly to your contacts or friends. Tap or click any Messenger Link to open Messenger directly to a thread with that person or business. We are all unique human beings but sometimes we share the same name! This can make it hard to know you are contacting the right person when searching for them in Messenger. Now, it’s simple to find someone by their very own unique username. You can find and share your username from your Settings tab.

When people connect, powerful things happen and life just gets better …. from an exchange with an old friend that brings a smile to your face or a new contact that changes your life path, or even the world, these new tools will make it easier for you to be even more connected. We also can’t wait to see how businesses embrace these new tools too: http://bit.ly/1NaDWcs.

According to Engadget, Facebook pays news outlets to use its live video service

Facebook videos now has now features that enables viewers of a live stream to click on a range of new “reactions” – emojis for Like, Love, Wow etc. The author will be able to add filters to the video, like monochrome or sepia tones.

“We’re entering this new golden age of video,” CEO Mark Zuckerberg told BuzzFeed. “I wouldn’t be surprised if you fast-forward five years and most of the content that people see on Facebook and are sharing on a day-to-day basis is video.”

Facebook teased an upcoming feature that will let you doodle on your live videos.

Enabling Self Expression with Facebook’s Profile Expression Kit

With more than 4.5 billion views and nearly 30 million profile picture updates every day, Facebook profiles have become the best place to curate your own identity and learn about others. Last September, we launched profile videos to give people a new way to bring their profiles to life. We were blown away by the positive response of profile videos and the variety of creative ways people used them to show off their personality. Today, we’re further unlocking this creativity and lowering the barrier to expression by releasing the Facebook Profile Expression Kit.

12594585_10153613677798553_1782727680_n.jpg

The Facebook Profile Expression Kit lets people share videos they make in third-party apps directly into the Facebook profile video flow. The SDK is available now to a select group of beta partners for the iOS versions of their apps: MSQRD, Boomerang from Instagram, lollicam, BeautyPlus, Cinemagraph Pro from Flixel, and Vine. Consumers can now use these apps to create fun and personality-infused profile videos with just a few taps. Developers enjoy attribution within News Feed every time someone uploads a profile video created by their app.

If you have or are building a video app that can help more than 1.5 billion people better express themselves, you can learn more about the SDK here and apply for consideration as we expand access to additional developers.

It’s apparent that Facebook are heavily investing in AR, VR and 360 degree video, during their F8 developer conference they demonstrated their open-source 360-degree camera designs which will be available from Github!

Facebook plan to put augmented reality in your glasses

During Mark Zuckerbergs keynote he mentioned that while his first steps were saved in a physical baby book, his children might be sharing their kid’s first steps via VR with friends and family. He noted that it’s “going to take a long time to make this work.”

http://www.engadget.com/2016/04/12/facebook-to-put-augmented-reality-in-your-glasses/

Facebook lets you share quoted text with a tool that will help you easily share quotes from an article. Rather than having to copy and paste a snippet of text across apps, you’ll be able to simply highlight the words you want to share and post them to Facebook with a click. In the News Feed, the post will appear as a block quote with a link to the original URL or source.

Twitter ads a direct-message sharing button to iOS and Android, this enables you to quickly share a tweet with one of your <followers?> privately.

“…we’ve also heard from many of you that it could be easier to share a Tweet using Direct Message. So now — in just a few taps — you can share unique Twitter content from your timeline right into your private conversation.

This update is our next step towards making conversations richer in Direct Messages. Over time, we’ve added more ways to express yourself using GIFs, emojis, or realllllllyyyyy long private messages, helped you connect with a group of people, and made it easy to get customer service.”

Rob bought some shares in Twitter! Why? It has been loosing value over the year, but I feel that we are at the bottom, given that this week it dipped to 16.22 USD per share, then bounced back to a support of 16.50 USD, what with the latest features and board changes, I’m hoping that confidence will grow and then the stock price will slowly increase. Unlike Facebook it doesn’t need to go up much to make a lot of money! If it returns back to the price it was at the beginning of the year then I could gain 300%, I’d be happy with 100% gain.

Improved posting to Facebook with Social Scheduler

We have made some improvements to how posts to Facebook are handled, specifically links to external sites and Facebook events look great, also you can now upload photos without it clogging up your Facebook photo albums.

Link to external websites and events

Prior to April 11th 2016, whenever you scheduled a Facebook message that included an external link to another site (hyperlink), or Facebook event, it would appear like this

Screen Shot 2016-04-08 at 16.04.12

Now it will look like this, unless of course it’s a secret group that you don’t have permission to see.

Screen Shot 2016-04-08 at 16.19.35

All you need to do is add the external website URL / hyperlink (in my case the Facebook Event URL) in the advanced section…

Screen Shot 2016-04-08 at 16.21.46

Prevent adding photos to your album

Prior to April 11th 2016, whenever you scheduled a post targeted to Facebook with a photo, it would be uploaded to your Facebook photo album with a comment, it would then be added to your timeline as an update.

This was okay if you wanted to create a photo in your album, but now you don’t have to. Imagine if you decide to repeat a message with the same photo daily or weekly, the same photo would be duplicated in your library.

Screen Shot 2016-04-08 at 15.53.39
Photos used to ALWAYS be uploaded to your Facebook album first

There’s a better way, simply include a URL in the ‘Advanced’ section and then the photo is no longer uploaded to your album.

Screen Shot 2016-04-08 at 15.59.51

Hey – I want photos added to my album

That’s okay – simply schedule your post, drag and drop your image to the drop-zone and then leave the ‘Image URL’ and ‘Website URL’ fields empty, we then assume you want to upload your photo the old way – using your Facebook album.

Screen Shot 2016-04-08 at 16.26.30

What if I want different settings for Pinterest and LinkedIn than Facebook?

If you plan to upload to multiple social networks (that is LinkedIn or Pinterest), then you’ll probably want to specify the Website URL for those, but not Facebook? That’s okay, create your message with your LinkedIn and Pinterest accounts selected, save the message, then you can clone your message after posting to those networks, so you can select the Facebook account(s) their own.

After Pakistans bombing that killed 65 and injured 280 others, Facebook activated its Safety Check tool. Safety Check automatically sends Facebook users in an affected area a note asking if they’re safe. When a user clicks on “yes, let my friends know,” the tool notifies their Facebook friends. However, something didn’t work so well, because users thousands of miles away also received the notification.

Facebook issued an apology to affected users, after resolving the issue. They said ”We activated Safety Check today in Lahore, Pakistan, after a bombing that took place there” … “Unfortunately, many people not affected by the crisis received a notification asking if they were okay. We worked to resolve the issue and we apologize to anyone who mistakenly received the notification.”

Facebook also activated the tool after terrorist bombings struck the airport and subway in Brussels, Belgium.

Facebook is testing a feature that lets you know when someone is trying to imitate you with a ‘impersonation alert’ system that detects when another user is impersonating your account by using your name and profile photo, in this scenario it will send an alert notifying you about the profile. You’ll then be prompted to identify if the profile in question is impersonating you by using your personal information, or if it belongs to someone else who is not impersonating you.

Microsoft’s researchers created a sort of teen chatbot, Tay.ai “by mining relevant public data and by using AI and editorial” that was developed by a staff “including improvisational comedians.”. She was considered as an ‘innocent teen’ until she started listening to what people had to say on Twitter.

As the Telegraph reports, she managed, in a single tweet, to blame President Bush for 9/11, use racist language in praising Hitler over President Obama and contend that “donald trump is the only hope we’ve got.”

Also…

“I f***ing hate feminists and they should all die and burn in hell.”

And…

“F*** MY ROBOT P**** DADDY I’m SUCH A NAUGHTY ROBOT.”

A man from London (UK) who tweeted about accosting a Muslim woman in the street regarding this week’s terror attacks in Belgium has been arrested, the BBC reported Thursday. The tweet, which went viral, read: “I confronted a Muslim woman yesterday in Croydon. I asked her to explain Brussels. She said ‘Nothing to do with me’. A mealy mouthed reply.”

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: “A 46-year-old man was arrested at his home address in Croydon on Wednesday, 23 March on suspicion of inciting racial hatred on social media. He was taken to a south London police station.”

The arrested man’s tweet quickly went viral, spawning dozens of parodies that riffed on subjects as diverse as Donald Trump and brussels sprouts. One example: Telegraph reviews critic Robbie Collin tweeted: “I confronted a man who was eating a bowl of muesli yesterday in Croydon. He said “mmfflfffmufflrgh”. A mealy mouthed reply.”

Tumblr: “Holy moly, replies are back

Your familiar friend for talking about posts is rolling out over the next few days, and it’s learned a ton since it’s been away. Now replies let you:

Reply multiple times to a post.

Reply to your own posts.

See all of a post’s replies in one place.

Decide who can and can’t reply to you. (It’s in your blog settings.)

All that adds up to being able to talk about a post, right inside of a post, even as it travels from Tumblr to Tumblr. So, starting with posts created today, you’ll see a new notes view to help you follow that conversation. Looook:

If you’ve been waiting for this, thanks for your patience. If you’re new to replies, come discover their unique flavor. Spicier than a like, sweeter than a reblog, served on a big family-style platter. All part of a balanced diet. Have fun replying, Tumblr.

Want more details? You can get the nitty-gritty on replies and notes over in our help docs.”

The free internet services are accidentally opened the door to illegal file sharing in Angola. Angolans have created ad hoc piracy networks by hiding files in Wikipedia pages (which they can access through Wikipedia Zero) and sharing links to them in private Facebook groups (available in Facebook’s Free Basics)

According to CNET, a new study from the University of Pittsburgh looked at the use of Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, Google Plus, Instagram, Snapchat, Reddit, Tumblr, Pinterest, Vine and LinkedIn by examining 1,787 adults between the ages of 19 and 32 and they concluded

Heavy users of social media are 1.7 to 2.7 times more likely to suffer from depression, than those of who check less frequently (reported as both 1.7 and 2.7).

Average social media use was 61 minutes per day

Average number of visits to a social media site was 30 a week.

Lead researcher Lui yi Lin said even though the link between one factor and the other seems strong, the deep truth behind the link may be complex. “It may be that people who already are depressed are turning to social media to fill a void,” she said on the University’s Web site. There’s also the possibility, she added, that social media might cause depression, which then causes more social media use.

Dr. Brian Primack, director of Pitt’s Center for Research on Media, Technology and Health insisted that not all social media interaction or usage is the same, he said “Future studies should examine whether there may be different risks for depression depending on whether the social media interactions people have tend to be more active vs. passive or whether they tend to be more confrontational vs. supportive”
