Facebook Messenger will soon get a lot more crowded. There are more than 10,000 developers building bots for Facebook’s messaging platform, Messenger’s head of product said in an interview Tuesday.

Facebook 360-degree photos are coming to your news feed

Facebook introduced support for 360-degree videos in your Newsfeed in September, soon that will apply to photos too. You’ll be able to snap a panoramic photo sphere on your phone and then upload it to Facebook.

A person viewing your post can either tilt your phone around to get the full view, or drag it around with your finger or mouse cursor.

Facebook will also add a new photos section to the Oculus app so you can go ahead and strap your Gear VR on to get the full immersion. Eugene Wei, head of video for Oculus said

Facebook – Extend the Reach of Video Ads through the Audience Network

Two formats for Audience Network videos

The Audience Network will deliver ads in both in-stream and in-article formats. The delivery in each channel will match viewers’ expectations of the site or app they’re on. In-stream video ads will play before, during or after (pre-roll, mid-roll or post-roll) video content on third party apps and sites across mobile and desktop. These sites include popular video publishers like USA Today Sports Media Group. In–article video ads will appear on mobile pages of publishers, such as Daily Mail, between paragraphs of text and play automatically when at least half the pixels are viewable. In this format, the viewer must opt-in for sound. In-article delivery will start with Instant Articles (articles that load immediately upon clicking from News Feed for a fast, immersive reading experience).

Improve return on ad spend with more placement channels

Introducing WhatsApp’s desktop app

Twitter starts to test persicope button, for Android

Engadget have reported on a post from The Verge that Android users might notice a new button in their Twitter app (‘might’ – because it’s being slowly rolled out). They said that Twitter have

…added a “go live” button that users can see when they compose tweets. It fires up Periscope when you tap it, so you can start broadcasting from within the application. But if you don’t have the video streaming app yet, it takes you straight to Google Play.

Amazon Video Direct poses challenge to YouTube

As reported by the BBC

Online retail giant Amazon has launched an online video service to rival Google’s YouTube.

Amazon Video Direct will allow users to post videos and earn royalties.

Viewers can rent and buy content or watch it for free with adverts. An ad-free version is offered to Amazon Prime members – a subscription service with other benefits.

Initially, videos will be viewable in the US, Germany, Austria, Japan and the UK.

The firm already offers access to professional TV shows and films via Prime Video, a rival to Netflix.

It also streams user-generated clips about video games via Twitch.

“There are more options for distribution than ever before and with Amazon Video Direct, for the first time, there’s a self-service option for video providers to get their content into a premium streaming subscription service,” said Jim Freeman, Vice President of Amazon Video

“We’re excited to make it even easier for content creators to find an audience, and for that audience to find great content.”

The news comes barely a month after online talent firm Fullscreen launched its own subscription video platform.

Previously the firm had published content on free platforms like YouTube, Instagram and Snapchat.

YouTube offers an ad-free subscription service of its own – YouTube Red – which costs $10 per month.

Google Introducing Spaces, a tool for small group sharing

Group sharing isn’t easy. From book clubs to house hunts to weekend trips and more, getting friends into the same app can be challenging. Sharing things typically involves hopping between apps to copy and paste links. Group conversations often don’t stay on topic, and things get lost in endless threads that you can’t easily get back to when you need them.

We wanted to build a better group sharing experience, so we made a new app called Spaces that lets people get people together instantly to share around any topic.

With Spaces, it’s simple to find and share articles, videos and images without leaving the app, since Google Search, YouTube, and Chrome come built in.

Social Scheduler

Michael is making great progress on the revamped user-interface, this will be the 3rd attempt at getting it right, not just from a users perspective, but from an extensibility point of view. It’s looking great – you’ll have to take our word for it though, we will show you when it’s done, then you can expect feature-after-feature to suddenly appear in short order afterwards.

Mobile app – Android notifications are being integrated to a clients project, then we intend to add it to Social Scheduler.

Talking of client work, we seem to have attracted a lot of interst recently and we are booked solid for a few months – this is good and bad. The good is that it funds the development of Social Scheduler without us getting worried about income, it’s bad in the sense we have less development time available to Social Scheduler.

Facebook dedicated apps for camera and live video!

Apparently, Facebook are wokring on a standalone camera app with the aim of helping you create and share more content. Wall Street Journal (WSJ’s) sources indicate that app has two prominent features: still photos and the ability to broadcast live video footage quickly.

WSJ’s sources also say that there’s a chance this new app will never be released, but the move would make sense for Facebook, especially if sharing really is on the decline.

Twitter turned over $594.5 million this quarter, less than expected. Twitter noted that its revenue was on the low-end of expectations. The good news is that Twitter is closing in on profitability in comparison to this time last year.

People have been screenshotting texts and posting them on the web for years, but it was this Instagram pic Taylor Swift posted of a conversation with Ed Sheeran that pushed me toward Talkshow. This little exchange is funny, it’s personal, and even though Tay and Ed are multi-platinum superstars, their conversation is relatable. Why? Because everybody texts! And everybody texts about everything: sports, TV, politics, Beyonce’s Lemonade, Damn Daniel, or what they’re eating for dinner. I wanted to create Talkshow to give people a platform to share these conversations in front of an audience.

How does Talkshow work?

Talkshow is a messaging app (available for iPhone and iPad) that lets people have conversations with their friends in public.

When you download the app and register, you can find friends on the app via Twitter, Facebook and/or your address book and start following them to find out when they’re hosting shows. You can also invite your friends to co-host shows with you.

Starting a show is as easy as sending a message — just pick your co-host(s) and choose a title for the show. They will get a push notification letting them know they’ve been invited to co-host your Talkshow, and then it’s show time. It’s easy to share pics and GIFs in shows and use third party keyboards to post stickers if that’s your thing.

Audiences can discover shows from the home screen of the app (we’ll be featuring great shows to bump them up to the top). As they watch they can like individual messages, share reactions and even send a request to become a co-host.

Friends and fans of people hosting shows don’t even have to have the app to tune in — every show has a permalink home on the web, and can easily be shared via email, SMS, Twitter or Facebook. And on desktop web, you can grab an embed code and put your Talkshow wherever you like. For example, here’s a great show from this weekend about the Warriors game:

Twitters new ‘Connect’ feature

Twitter says it’s built a feature that will recommend accounts based on who you follow already, your tweets, what’s popular around you and what’s happening in the world.

Twitter connects you with the people you’re interested in —whether that’s someone across the world who shares your love for science-fiction, your friends and family, a politician, or your local sports team (go Warriors!). However, finding new accounts to follow used to require jumping through a few hoops and a dash of luck. That’s why we’ve reimagined the experience with our new Connect tab. Starting today, you’ll see a detailed list of people and accounts we think you’ll enjoy following, all easily accessible in one place.

 

To give you the best recommendations — which we’ll continue to refine over time — we look at who you already follow, Tweets you like, popular accounts in your local area, what’s happening in the world right now, and more. We’ll also let you know exactly why we’re showing you each recommendation.

The Connect tab also makes it easier to connect with your friends and family by giving you the option to automatically sync your address book. And if someone in your address book joins Twitter, we’ll let you know so you can give them a warm welcome.

We’re thrilled to get this new feature into your hands and help you connect with even more people that are relevant to you. The Connect tab is rolling out today to everyone on Twitter for iOS and Android. To check it out, update your app and you’ll see a little blue prompt introducing the Connect tab when it’s available for you.

Youtube – Loss of monetization during the Content ID dispute process

At YouTube, one of our core values is a belief in the freedom of opportunity. We believe anyone should have the opportunity to earn money from the videos they create and turn their channels into successful businesses. That’s why we opened up the YouTube Partner Program nine years ago and why we remain the only platform where anyone with an idea and a camera can turn their videos into full time jobs.

We understand just how important revenue is to our creator community, and we’ve been listening closely to concerns about the loss of monetization during the Content ID dispute process. Currently videos that are claimed and disputed don’t earn revenue for anyone, which is an especially frustrating experience for creators if that claim ends up being incorrect while a video racks up views in its first few days.


Today, we’re announcing a major step to help fix that frustrating experience. We’re developing a new solution that will allow videos to earn revenue while a Content ID claim is being disputed. Here’s how it will work: when both a creator and someone making a claim choose to monetize a video, we will continue to run ads on that video and hold the resulting revenue separately. Once the Content ID claim or dispute is resolved, we’ll pay out that revenue to the appropriate party.


We’re working on this new system now and hope to roll it out to all YouTube partners in the coming months. Here’s a closer look at how it’ll work once it’s live:



We strongly believe in fair use and believe that this improvement to Content ID will make a real difference. In addition to our work on the Content ID dispute process, we’re also paying close attention to creators’ concerns about copyright claims on videos they believe may be fair use. We want to help both the YouTube community and copyright owners alike better understand what fair use looks like online, which is why we launched our fair use protection program last year and recently introduced new Help Center pages on this topic.

Even though Content ID claims are disputed less than 1% of the time, we agree that this process could be better. Making sure our Content ID tools are being used properly is deeply important to us, so we’ve built a dedicated team to monitor this. Using a combination of algorithms and manual review, this team has resolved millions of invalid claims in the last year alone, and acted on millions more before they impacted creators. The team also restricts feature access and even terminates a partner’s access to Content ID tools if we find they are repeatedly abusing these tools.

We will continue to invest in both people and technology to make sure that Content ID keeps working for creators and rightsholders. We want to thank everyone who’s shared their concerns about unintended effects from Content ID claims. It’s allowed us to create a better system for everyone and we hope to share more updates soon.

YouTube introduce Bump Ads

Built for mobile: Bumper ads drive incremental reach and frequency, particularly on smartphones

Recent research has shown that half of 18-49 year olds turn to their mobile device first to watch video. Even in the living room, many people prefer to watch on their smartphone – for the control, personalization and ease it offers. And as viewing habits change, we are working to introduce new formats adapted to these habits.

That’s why today we’re announcing Bumper ads – a new six-second video format, sold through the AdWords auction on a CPM basis. Bumper ads are ideal for driving incremental reach and frequency, especially on mobile, where “snackable videos” perform well.

Given the succinct nature of the format, we’ve seen Bumper ads work best when combined with a TrueView or Google Preferred campaign. In early tests, Bumpers drove strong lift in upper funnel metrics like recall, awareness and consideration. We also see that Bumpers work well to drive incremental reach and frequency when paired with a TrueView campaign.

Atlantic Records was an early tester of this new format, using Bumpers to launch English band Rudimental’s second album. As Fiona Byers, Senior Marketing Manager of Atlantic Records/Warner Music Group said, “TrueView and Bumpers were a really important part of the recent Rudimental campaign to tell the story of the band’s second album. Through cost-efficient bumpers we could really showcase the plethora of legendary guests featured on the record. They each gave a short sharp insight into a featured artist and individual track on the album, with TrueView providing the fuller story around the album and the band. When used in conjunction, TrueView plus Bumpers really work more effectively than either format on its own.”

As a quick and fun format, Bumpers lend themselves well to serialized content. Audi Germany cut up their longer TrueView ad to introduce their Q-series SUVs with evocative German “q” words like querpass (cross kick) and quantensprung (quantum leap). Their early adoption of the format mirrors Audi Germany’s tagline “Vorsprung durch Technik” (“advantage through technology”).

We like to think of Bumper ads as little haikus of video ads – and we’re excited to see what the creative community will do with them. You can use Bumpers beginning in May by talking to your Google sales representative, and stay tuned as we continue to roll out new ad formats that are uniquely adapted to the way people watch video now, and in the future.

YouTube TV – as early as next year

CNET say that Bloomberg news are reporting that YouTube is finalizing deals with Broadcast TV and cable channels (that is NBCUniversal, Viacom, Twenty-First Century Fox, and CBS), to launch a paid-for TV service, called ‘UnPlugged’ over the internet, in 2017.

The expected cost is less than $35 a month.

Google Hangouts – direct peer-ot-peer connection

To improve audio and video quality, Hangouts calls use a direct peer-to-peer connection when possible. This allows Hangouts to connect your call directly to the person you’re talking to, rather than routing the call through one of Google’s servers.

When does Hangouts use peer-to-peer calling?

Every Hangouts call starts with all participants connecting to a Google server. The audio and video are then relayed to the people in the call. When there are only two participants in the call, Hangouts may attempt to establish a peer-to-peer connection between them. If the peer-to-peer connection isn’t possible, the Hangout will continue to send and receive audio and video using the existing connection to Google.

This feature will be available for participants on Google Apps with the latest Hangouts apps for iPhone/iPad and Android. We hope to bring this functionality to other devices in the future.

How does peer-to-peer calling help me?

Peer-to-peer connections improve almost all two-participant Hangouts calls. Routing audio and video through a Google server means that your call with a family member in the next town, or your colleague in the other building, could end up traveling farther than needed. Instead, a peer-to-peer connection allows the audio and video to be sent directly, allowing for the best possible quality.

Does Hangouts use peer-to-peer calling for a Hangout with more than two participants?

Peer-to-peer connections are used only for calls with two participants. If any additional participants join, Hangouts will immediately go back to sending and receiving data using the connection to the Google server.

How does peer-to-peer calling impact my personal information?

In order to create a peer-to-peer connection, it is necessary for Google to make the IP address of each participant available to the other. (The IP address is like a phone number; in order for the two devices to speak to each other, they need to know how to contact each other.) Though this happens in the background, it may be possible for a highly motivated and technically proficient person to discover the participants’ IP addresses, which can be used to approximate location. This discovery can happen only during the call.

How does peer-to-peer calling work in an organization?

For organizations with internal networks, a peer-to-peer call where both parties are on the network would take place primarily within the network. If one participant is on the network and the other isn’t, the IP address visible to the other participant is likely to be the IP address of the organization’s gateway, rather than any specific internal network address (this depends on the individual network configuration). This is the same IP address that is displayed when a member of the organization visits a public website. From this perspective, Hangouts operates in the same way as most other Internet-enabled applications.

– Fixed issue where the sun overlay was flipped on the map.

– We now show a clear error message if Periscope can’t access your Twitter account (which causes Tweets to fail). If this is happening, try re-entering your Twitter password in iOS settings.

– Added an option in Settings to turn off video stabilization, which could darken broadcasts in low light conditions.

If you like including animated gifs, then maybe Giphy Keys for iOS will be a good solution for you, it includes a keyboard too, so you don’t have to swap between a GIF picker and back to your keyboard. I think that this is for SMS messaging, but I’m not sure from the description whether this is nicely integrated with applications like Twitter, where you would usually upload an animated gif separately or through their own GIF search.

Instagram multiple-account support is now available on iOS… at least to some iOS users!  It was seen back in November for Android by downloading a special APK to take advantage.

Instagram are introducing 60-second video ads (up to 30 seconds was already available), with this comes more revenue for Facebook (yes Rob will be keeping his shares in).  According to Engadget ‘The way the company handles ads isn’t as intrusive as something like YouTube — as a user, you do’t have to wait to scroll past and see what your followers have been posting — but the nature of the feed means it’s still hard to ignore them completely’

Twitter have been experimenting with animated GIF support in Twitter, for select use, not just for injecting existing animated cat GIFs from the internet, but it sounds like Twitter could partner up with consumer and entertainment brands, such as the Super Bowl to inject trending and GEO located GIFs.  Brands could prepared some GIF’s in advance, or curate special replay GIFs ready for people to inject into their timeline effortlessly.

Twitter have written a blog titled ‘Combating violent extremism’, in it they highlight that they condemn the user of Twitter to promote terrorism and they since mid 2015 they have suspended over 125,000 accounts for threatening or promoting terrorist acts, primarily related to ISIS.

Twitter have employed more staff, use a proprietary spam-fighting tool-set and co-operating with the FBI.  Twitter have partnered with counter extremist organisations and attended government-convened summits on extremism.

As an open platform for expression, we have always sought to strike a balance between the enforcement of our own Twitter Rules covering prohibited behaviors, the legitimate needs of law enforcement, and the ability of users to share their views freely – including views that some people may disagree with or find offensive.

As many experts and other companies have noted, there is no “magic algorithm” for identifying terrorist content on the internet, so global online platforms are forced to make challenging judgement calls based on very limited information and guidance. In spite of these challenges, we will continue to aggressively enforce our Rules in this area, and engage with authorities and other relevant organizations to find solutions to this critical issue and promote powerful counter-speech narratives.

A Trip to Unicorn Island: From the team at Astronauts Wanted, this feature-length movie gives fans an extraordinary look inside the life and journey of Lilly Singh as she embarks on a challenging 26-city global tour where she has to remember to practice what she preaches: happiness is the only thing worth fighting for.

Untitled Joey Graceffa project: In this all-new reality adventure series, Joey Graceffa brings together an ensemble of top YouTubers for a murder mystery they’ll never forget. They’ll form alliances to survive, but little do they know that most won’t make it out alive.

360 Project from MatPat of Game Theory: YouTube educator and pop culture expert MatPat from The Game Theorists invites the audience to come along for the ride in an innovative new series and 360 VR experience. Google Hangouts are going to improve audio and video quality by using a direct peer-to-peer connection when possible, rather than connecting the call through one of Googles servers.

It should be noted that using direct peer-to-peer between yourself and another person will reveal your IP addresses, which means that it is possible to approximate your location.

Could this be just to improve video and audio quality, or because your skipping their servers, then perhaps it could be cost saving too?!

Yahoo bought the Tumblr blogging platform for $1.1 billion in 2013, but it’s now lowered its valuation to $760 (down $230m from it’s previous $990m).

Yahoo is laying off 1,700 staff (That’s 15% of its workforce) and closing five offices (Dubai, Mexico City, Buenos Aires, Madrid and Milan) with a target of reducing operating costs by $400m.

In a statement CEO Marissa Mayer said, “today, we’re announcing a strategic plan that we strongly believe will enable us to accelerate Yahoo’s transformation. This is a strong plan calling for bold shifts in products and in resources.”

Yahoo was full of legacy businesses with a declining revenue stream. The ‘Mavens’ in the chart represents mobile, video, native and social, it shows a revenue source that has an “incredibly fast growth line of business.”.  She said Yahoo will focus on its top businesses, Search, Mail and Tumblr. It will also be even more bullish on mobile with upcoming changes to the sports and finance apps and the recent change to the search app.
