Draft mode – take your time to get things right.

While you’ll feel compelled to charge forward it’s often a gentle step back that will reveal to you where you are and what you truly seek. ― Rasheed Ogunlaru

Social Scheduler now enables you schedule individual posts as a draft, this means that the post will not be sent, until someone flicks the switch to make the post final.

Here’s an example of how this looks in the user-interface.

Screen Shot 2016-05-22 at 20.24.21.png

We make it obvious in the calendar when posts are marked as draft; the red-icon in the top-right is what makes it obvious.

Screen Shot 2016-05-22 at 21.07.34.png

Now that we have the draft feature, we wanted to make it even more powerful for you, by supporting a new ‘draft’ column in the bulk-upload template.

Let’s look at an example. Visit London have an events page on their website and you can now add these events quickly into your calendar in draft mode, so that you can remind yourself of upcoming events that need to be detailed in your social media marketing efforts.

In my example, I’m going to take the ‘Polo in the park’, ‘Hampton Court Palace’, ‘Royal Ascott’, ‘Fathers day’ and ‘Wimbledon’ events and reserve slots in the calendar to discuss them.

Here’s their website today…

Screen Shot 2016-05-22 at 20.35.58.png

I’ve downloaded the Bulk Upload template from Social Scheduler (it’s a comma separated value file – CSV) and you can see the last column ‘Draft‘, for all events I’ve set this to ‘TRUE’ (you can also use yes, y,1,true).

The draft column is used to clearly indicate that more work needs to be done on these posts and being ‘draft’ will prevent Social Scheduler sending these posts to your social platforms.

It’s likely that for each post you would

 • Tweak the date/time that the post will be sent
 • Include interesting text, perhaps cross-posting a different copy per platform (recommended)
 • Add images
 • Add hyperlinks (with optional link name, title and description)

Screen Shot 2016-05-22 at 20.34.29.png

When you import the CSV file, you’ll get to review all of the messages. You can tweak any of the text and adjust whether the post should be draft or final.

Screen Shot 2016-05-22 at 20.35.07.png

Once these draft posts have been added with your other scheduled messages, you can clearly see how any days that you’re not posting content and react accordingly.

Screen Shot 2016-05-22 at 20.35.45.png

Of course, once you are happy with your changes to your post, you would change it from ‘draft’ to ‘final’ to enable Social Scheduler to post your message.

Michael is continuing with the user-interface re-write

Rob improved the bulk uploader so that links work better, plus all the related fields (link name, title, description). You can also now delete entries during the import process.

Clickbank – goodbye low quality blog posts!

Android push notifications – hopefully very soon, so much client work at the moment!

Marketing – contacting people who left feedback in the registration form (whatfor, magic wand, anythingelse) – some were just plain funny, like requesting teleportation and telling us that it’s currently raining cats and dogs! Groups on Facebook [are…] apparently testing a new feature on the iOS and Android apps [… ] dubbed “Discover.” That also lets you peruse public and private groups and see which friends are in local groups, according to Mashable.

The groups are cordoned off into categories for different interests like parenting, networking and food. The functionality is expected to roll out to more users over the next couple of weeks.

Coming Soon: Broadcast Search, Drones and Save Beyond 24 Hours

Everyday, our community creates amazing broadcasts — whether visiting a new place, performing a song, or sparking a passionate discussion. In the coming weeks, we’re launching broadcast search and drone support to help people form communities around the topics they care about and broadcast from new perspectives. We also want to share a preview of our full beyond 24 hours approach that will be available in the coming weeks.

In the coming weeks, you’ll be able to search for broadcasts by title or topic. When you tap on the search button in the Global List, you’ll see a list of suggested topics to search for, including #Travel, #Music, #Food and more. To broadcast about a topic, simply tap the Broadcast button in the topic’s search results to add the relevant hashtag, or add the hashtag to your title directly.

We’re also testing two special topics that you can search for. In “First Scope,” you can welcome new broadcasters to our community. In “GoPros and Drones,” you can find broadcasts from GoPros and, for the first time, drones!

A New Perspective with Drones

To broadcast from a supported DJI drone, just connect your iPhone to your drone’s remote. We’ll automatically pull in your drone’s video feed and let you switch between it, your iPhone cameras and even your GoPro. During your broadcast, you can narrate from a bird’s eye view using your phone or even Sketch on the broadcast to highlight different sights:

Watch Zagat’s drone broadcast from a New York farm.

Anyone with an iPhone and a supported DJI drone will be able to start broadcasting in the coming weeks.

Save Your Broadcasts Beyond 24 Hours

Last week, we introduced a public beta for you to add #save to your broadcasts to keep them beyond 24 hours. Today, we want to give you a preview of the full solution that we’re launching in the next few weeks.

Follow Saki and her saved broadcasts around Japan

Our goal is to give you full control of your broadcasts. Soon, your broadcasts will be automatically saved on Periscope and Twitter with comments and hearts. Should you change your mind, you can still delete your broadcasts at any time in the post-broadcast screen or in your profile. And, for those of you who still want your broadcasts to be removed after 24 hours, you can easily configure that in your account settings.

We hope these updates will make it easier for you to find broadcasts and communities that you care about. To learn more, visit our Help Center for search and drone broadcasts.

Much love,

LinkedIn to rival Facebook Instant Articles?

LinkedIn might be considering an Instant Articles feature of its own, apparently they recently started floating this idea to “various” publishers.

Instant Articles are links to stories that you can read within Facebook’s app, elimitating the need to visit a third-party site.

A LinkedIn spokesperson provided BuzzFeed News the following statement:

Publishers remain a very important part of our content ecosystem and we are in regular conversations with them about new ways to work together. Our goal is to ensure we get the right content in front of the right member at the right time to deliver the best member experience possible.

YouTube making it easier for advertisers to jump onto viral videos via Google Preferred

Tonight [Thursday, May 5, 2016], YouTube hosted our fifth annual Brandcast in New York, our digital Newfronts event, where we showcase the best of YouTube to advertisers and agencies. With a little help from Big Bird, the Whip Nae Nae, and Sia, we showed that YouTube is where the world chooses to watch: on mobile alone, we now reach more 18-49 year-olds in the U.S. than any broadcast or cable TV network.1

As a result, our influence is greater than ever. In fact, nearly 60 percent of YouTube subscribers say they’d follow a YouTube creator’s advice on what to buy over that of their favorite TV or movie star. And the influence of YouTube stars continues to grow—last year, 6 in 10 of the most influential celebrities among teens were YouTubers, and this year that number jumped to 8 in 10.

To help brands capture some of this momentum, we have a premium content offering called Google Preferred that features creators like Lilly Singh, sWooZie and Laura Vitale. Organized into 13 lineup categories—including Comedy, Music, and Food & Recipes—Google Preferred is easy to buy and gives advertisers access to the most-loved and most-watched content on YouTube. In fact, Google Preferred reaches more people in the U.S. on mobile than all full episode players combined.2 And, we announced at Brandcast that Google Preferred just got better. Here’s how:

1. More Can’t-Miss Moments With Google Preferred Breakout Videos

Pop culture moments like the Harlem Shake and Let It Go are as unexpected as they are popular. While Google Preferred gives brands access to established creator channels, our new Breakout Videos offering lets them advertise on emerging content—the hottest and fastest-rising videos on YouTube. With the launch of Google Preferred Breakout Videos in the U.S., brands can be there alongside the next breakout star.

2. More Ease and Relevance with Programmatic Guaranteed for Google Preferred

To make it even easier to be there in the moment viewers are watching, upfront buyers will soon be able to execute their Google Preferred—and Breakout Videos—buy programmatically through DoubleClick Bid Manager. This means all video campaigns (including TrueView, Google Preferred, and cross-exchange) can be managed in one place.

3. More Sports Fans With NBA Highlights on Google Preferred

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver also took to the Brandcast stage to announce that NBA inventory is now part of Google Preferred. Top NBA highlights will surface in Google Search and on YouTube, offering brands access to the NBA’s loyal fan base across screens. In addition, the NBA will soon launch two new VR series on YouTube that give viewers a behind-the-scenes look at team arenas and their favorite players.

4. More Great Results for Brands

With new additions like Breakout Videos, Programmatic Guaranteed, and NBA highlights, Google Preferred will keep delivering massive reach, and strong results for brands.

Already this year, among the Google Preferred campaigns we measured, 75 percent drove lifts in consideration3 and 61 percent drove lifts in favorability.4 Google Preferred is driving results later in the consumer journey, too: it raised purchase intent in two-thirds of campaigns.5

Results like these have encouraged nearly twice the number of brands in the U.S. to take advantage of Google Preferred in the last year.6

Chime in with your Google Preferred questions and comments on #Brandcast, and check out six questions every brand should consider after Brandcast. We’ll post even more content after the show on the Brandcast website.

FACEBOOK

…The Court accepts as true plaintiffs’ allegations that Facebook’s face recognition technology involves a scan of face geometry that was done without plaintiffs’ consent,” U.S. District Judge James Donato wrote in his ruling…

http://www.engadget.com/2016/05/06/facebook-lawsuit-privacy-photo-tagging-software/

http://www.cnet.com/news/facebook-denies-biased-trends-allegations

http://www.cnet.com/news/facebooks-trending-news-feed-may-be-a-sham/

The world’s largest social network calls out the top trending stories on its site, which is visited by more than a billion people every day. But the list may be manipulated by Facebook’s employees, who are allegedly deciding what’s “trending” based on their political views.

Facebook’s trending topics list … may have become a tool for employees to wield their political opinions

However Tom Stocky from Facebook have responded on their Blog

My team is responsible for Trending Topics, and I want to address today’s reports alleging that Facebook contractors manipulated Trending Topics to suppress stories of interest to conservatives. We take these reports extremely seriously, and have found no evidence that the anonymous allegations are true.

Facebook is a platform for people and perspectives from across the political spectrum. There are rigorous guidelines in place for the review team to ensure consistency and neutrality. These guidelines do not permit the suppression of political perspectives. Nor do they permit the prioritization of one viewpoint over another or one news outlet over another. These guidelines do not prohibit any news outlet from appearing in Trending Topics.

Trending Topics is designed to showcase the current conversation happening on Facebook. Popular topics are first surfaced by an algorithm, then audited by review team members to confirm that the topics are in fact trending news in the real world and not, for example, similar-sounding topics or misnomers.

We are proud that, in 2015, the US election was the most talked-about subject on Facebook, and we want to encourage that robust political discussion from all sides. We have in place strict guidelines for our trending topic reviewers as they audit topics surfaced algorithmically: reviewers are required to accept topics that reflect real world events, and are instructed to disregard junk or duplicate topics, hoaxes, or subjects with insufficient sources. Facebook does not allow or advise our reviewers to systematically discriminate against sources of any ideological origin and we’ve designed our tools to make that technically not feasible. At the same time, our reviewers’ actions are logged and reviewed, and violating our guidelines is a fireable offense.

There have been other anonymous allegations — for instance that we artificially forced ‪#‎BlackLivesMatter‬ to trend. We looked into that charge and found that it is untrue. We do not insert stories artificially into trending topics, and do not instruct our reviewers to do so. Our guidelines do permit reviewers to take steps to make topics more coherent, such as combining related topics into a single event (such as ‪#‎starwars‬ and ‪#‎maythefourthbewithyou‬), to deliver a more integrated experience.

Our review guidelines for Trending Topics are under constant review, and we will continue to look for improvements. We will also keep looking into any questions about Trending Topics to ensure that people are matched with the stories that are predicted to be the most interesting to them, and to be sure that our methods are as neutral and effective as possible.

Michael is making great progress on the revamped user-interface, this will be the 3rd attempt at getting it right, not just from a users perspective, but from an extensibility point of view. It’s looking great – you’ll have to take our word for it though, we will show you when it’s done, then you can expect feature-after-feature to suddenly appear in short order afterwards.

Mobile app – Android notifications are being integrated to a clients project, then we intend to add it to Social Scheduler.

Talking of client work, we seem to have attracted a lot of interst recently and we are booked solid for a few months – this is good and bad. The good is that it funds the development of Social Scheduler without us getting worried about income, it’s bad in the sense we have less development time available to Social Scheduler.

Facebook dedicated apps for camera and live video!

Apparently, Facebook are wokring on a standalone camera app with the aim of helping you create and share more content. Wall Street Journal (WSJ’s) sources indicate that app has two prominent features: still photos and the ability to broadcast live video footage quickly.

WSJ’s sources also say that there’s a chance this new app will never be released, but the move would make sense for Facebook, especially if sharing really is on the decline.

Twitter is still struggling to make profit and this probably explains why Robs shares have drop £400 in value! They have 310 million subscribers but made a loss this quarter of $79 Million.

Twitter turned over $594.5 million this quarter, less than expected. Twitter noted that its revenue was on the low-end of expectations. The good news is that Twitter is closing in on profitability in comparison to this time last year.

Twitter enable you to flag multiple abusive tweets in one report

We want everyone on Twitter to feel safe expressing themselves. Behavior that crosses the line into abuse is against our rules and we want it to be easy for you to report it to us. So, today we’re introducing an improvement to our reporting process: the ability to attach multiple Tweets to a single report.

This update makes it easier for you to provide us with more information about the extent of abuse and reduces the time it takes to do so. That added context often helps us investigate issues and get them resolved faster.

Safety continues to be a top priority at Twitter. We have more improvements coming that will give you even more control over your experience and look forward to sharing those updates soon. For more information on our current tools, policies, and processes, head over to our safety center.

We’re beginning to roll out this change on iOS, Android, and on twitter.com, and expect all users worldwide to get access to the feature in the coming weeks.

Jelly (Twitter co-founder)

On April 29th, Biz Stones Jelly App has been relaunched, it’s labelled as a ‘New search engine’.

In his blog post he says

<img data-position=”3″ src=”https://devologyltd.files.wordpress.com/2016/05/jelly.png” data-mce-src=”Jelly.png”

Jelly is the only search engine in the world with an attitude, an opinion, and the experience of people to back it all up. Only Jelly can say you asked the wrong question. Only Jelly can give you answers you wanted but didn’t think to ask. Only Jelly will deliver a thoughtful answer to your anonymous question. This is all because Jelly is humanity plus technology.

How We Got Here

Ten years ago, the world was going mobile. A small team created a simple tool to harness this potential in a productive way. As a co-founder of Twitter, I helped build a new form of communication that amplified humanity’s ability to spread ideas, self-organize, and do amazing things. Jelly is an extension of that same thinking — amplifying humanity with software.

Technology is superior when humanity is woven into its DNA. I’m newly fond of saying, “Everyone is working on Artificial Intelligence, what about just, Intelligence?” Jelly sprung from the question, “What would search look like if it were created today?” We knew mobility and good old, human experience would be defining factors.

Ask Jelly and we’ll let you know when you have your answer.

Your Time is Your Life

Less time flipping through results means more time having hot chocolate with Jake.

It takes seconds to enter a question into a search engine. Web search prides itself in providing hundreds of millions of potentially relevant documents in fractions of a second. Then you spend your time researching those results to come up with something that satisfies. Getting to a real answer may take a few seconds, it may take several minutes—that time adds up.

The average person likely has several if not a dozen or more ordinary questions every day. Think about the time you spend “searching” each day. Those minutes easily turn into hours. Jelly gives you your time back. Enter your question, then return to your life. In its early phase, it may take minutes for Jelly to get you an answer, but Jelly is doing the work.

Technology Plus Humanity

We confess, we’re using a bit of AI. Yes, we’ve developed a routing algorithm. Each query and every answer is freighted with metadata. But all this science is in service of getting you the right responses from the right folks. People who can help because they’ve been there, they have the experience, they have the opinion, and most importantly, they have the answers you need — and you can follow up with them too.

People choose topics in which they have experience and opinion—they answer your questions.

The People Who Power Jelly

We all have an instinct to help. If we pass a driver broken down on the road, our first thought is to help. When friction is removed between wanting to help and helping, people help — especially when it’s something they already know. Studies have shown that helping others releases the same brain chemical as winning money. Our incentive to help is wired in.

There’s no account needed to ask a question on Jelly. You are encouraged to create an account if you would like to answer questions in certain topics or otherwise engage with people on Jelly through commenting, saving good questions, sharing, and other interactive features we’ve built so far, and will continue building. Setting up an account is free and easy.

Jelly Is Officially “Out There”

Jelly has been in a “closed beta” for a while. That means people have been testing it out while we’ve been building it, finding bugs, and being very patient with us. Today, you can download on the App Store or use on the Web. We still have more to build (and possibly some quirks). It’s more important to get Jelly into the hands of people, than try to perfect it.

Get for free!

This release is the beginning. We believe strongly that big changes are coming to the way people interact with technology. Getting answers to questions is, and always has been, central to living our lives. Jelly takes out the middleman—results—and answers questions directly. Technology should get out of your way so you can decide how to live your life.

TalkShow (Co-founded by former Twitter exec Michael Sippey,)

Talkshow is texting in public.

People text amazing things.

Talkshow is a simple messaging app that allows you to text these things in public. With Talkshow, individuals, groups of friends, entertainers, creators — anyone! — can have conversations in public, to be viewed by others in real time or after the fact. Every Talkshow can be shared outside the app and embedded into other websites.

Talkshow is available today for iPhone and iPad and we can’t wait for people to download it and start hosting their own Talkshows.

Why Talkshow?

Conversations are how we entertain each other and advance ideas, and messaging is how most of us have conversations today. We believe a fast, simple and uncluttered conversation between friends can be entertaining and enlightening for more than just the people talking. So, Talkshow is about turning messaging into media. That’s why we call it “texting in public.”

Taylor and Ed. https://www.instagram.com/p/2QHgzkDvMM/

People have been screenshotting texts and posting them on the web for years, but it was this Instagram pic Taylor Swift posted of a conversation with Ed Sheeran that pushed me toward Talkshow. This little exchange is funny, it’s personal, and even though Tay and Ed are multi-platinum superstars, their conversation is relatable. Why? Because everybody texts! And everybody texts about everything: sports, TV, politics, Beyonce’s Lemonade, Damn Daniel, or what they’re eating for dinner. I wanted to create Talkshow to give people a platform to share these conversations in front of an audience.

How does Talkshow work?

Talkshow is a messaging app (available for iPhone and iPad) that lets people have conversations with their friends in public.

Some screenshots of Talkshow.

When you download the app and register, you can find friends on the app via Twitter, Facebook and/or your address book and start following them to find out when they’re hosting shows. You can also invite your friends to co-host shows with you.

Starting a show is as easy as sending a message — just pick your co-host(s) and choose a title for the show. They will get a push notification letting them know they’ve been invited to co-host your Talkshow, and then it’s show time. It’s easy to share pics and GIFs in shows and use third party keyboards to post stickers if that’s your thing.

Audiences can discover shows from the home screen of the app (we’ll be featuring great shows to bump them up to the top). As they watch they can like individual messages, share reactions and even send a request to become a co-host.

Friends and fans of people hosting shows don’t even have to have the app to tune in — every show has a permalink home on the web, and can easily be shared via email, SMS, Twitter or Facebook. And on desktop web, you can grab an embed code and put your Talkshow wherever you like. For example, here’s a great show from this weekend about the Warriors game:

Game 4 Talkshow: https://talkshow.im/show/NwH18okLRamgAWiP/

Go start your own Talkshow

We’ve been beta testing for a few months with a small group of people from different backgrounds. Now we’re opening the app up to everyone, and we can’t wait to tune into more conversations from a wide variety of people and voices.

Head to the App Store to download the app and start texting in public. Questions, comments, feedback? Hit us up on Twitter, Facebook or email us at hello@talkshow.im and we’ll get back to you as soon as we can. Want to read more? Check out our FAQ here.

See you on Talkshow!

Twitters new ‘Connect’ feature

Twitter says it’s built a feature that will recommend accounts based on who you follow already, your tweets, what’s popular around you and what’s happening in the world.

Twitter connects you with the people you’re interested in —whether that’s someone across the world who shares your love for science-fiction, your friends and family, a politician, or your local sports team (go Warriors!). However, finding new accounts to follow used to require jumping through a few hoops and a dash of luck. That’s why we’ve reimagined the experience with our new Connect tab. Starting today, you’ll see a detailed list of people and accounts we think you’ll enjoy following, all easily accessible in one place.

To give you the best recommendations — which we’ll continue to refine over time — we look at who you already follow, Tweets you like, popular accounts in your local area, what’s happening in the world right now, and more. We’ll also let you know exactly why we’re showing you each recommendation.

The Connect tab also makes it easier to connect with your friends and family by giving you the option to automatically sync your address book. And if someone in your address book joins Twitter, we’ll let you know so you can give them a warm welcome.

We’re thrilled to get this new feature into your hands and help you connect with even more people that are relevant to you. The Connect tab is rolling out today to everyone on Twitter for iOS and Android. To check it out, update your app and you’ll see a little blue prompt introducing the Connect tab when it’s available for you.

Youtube – Loss of monetization during the Content ID dispute process

At YouTube, one of our core values is a belief in the freedom of opportunity. We believe anyone should have the opportunity to earn money from the videos they create and turn their channels into successful businesses. That’s why we opened up the YouTube Partner Program nine years ago and why we remain the only platform where anyone with an idea and a camera can turn their videos into full time jobs.

We understand just how important revenue is to our creator community, and we’ve been listening closely to concerns about the loss of monetization during the Content ID dispute process. Currently videos that are claimed and disputed don’t earn revenue for anyone, which is an especially frustrating experience for creators if that claim ends up being incorrect while a video racks up views in its first few days.

Today, we’re announcing a major step to help fix that frustrating experience. We’re developing a new solution that will allow videos to earn revenue while a Content ID claim is being disputed. Here’s how it will work: when both a creator and someone making a claim choose to monetize a video, we will continue to run ads on that video and hold the resulting revenue separately. Once the Content ID claim or dispute is resolved, we’ll pay out that revenue to the appropriate party.

We’re working on this new system now and hope to roll it out to all YouTube partners in the coming months. Here’s a closer look at how it’ll work once it’s live:

We strongly believe in fair use and believe that this improvement to Content ID will make a real difference. In addition to our work on the Content ID dispute process, we’re also paying close attention to creators’ concerns about copyright claims on videos they believe may be fair use. We want to help both the YouTube community and copyright owners alike better understand what fair use looks like online, which is why we launched our fair use protection program last year and recently introduced new Help Center pages on this topic.

Even though Content ID claims are disputed less than 1% of the time, we agree that this process could be better. Making sure our Content ID tools are being used properly is deeply important to us, so we’ve built a dedicated team to monitor this. Using a combination of algorithms and manual review, this team has resolved millions of invalid claims in the last year alone, and acted on millions more before they impacted creators. The team also restricts feature access and even terminates a partner’s access to Content ID tools if we find they are repeatedly abusing these tools.

We will continue to invest in both people and technology to make sure that Content ID keeps working for creators and rightsholders. We want to thank everyone who’s shared their concerns about unintended effects from Content ID claims. It’s allowed us to create a better system for everyone and we hope to share more updates soon.

YouTube – mobile home page redesign has better recommendations.

Tuesday, April 26, 2016

Whether you want to watch hilarious sketch comedy, your favorite vlogger, new let’s plays, or music videos, you should be able to see new videos you love every time you visit YouTube—right on your homepage. Starting today, when you open the YouTube app on your iPhone or Android phone, you’ll experience a redesigned Home, with a clean and simple format that invites you to discover and enjoy.

<img data-position=”3″ src=”https://devologyltd.files.wordpress.com/2016/05/000a49cc-d997-43eb-90bb-ec3cbc6335db.png” data-mce-src=”000A49CC-D997-43EB-90BB-EC3CBC6335DB.png”

Large, high resolution images make it easy to identify videos you want to watch, and a prominent icon highlights the creator for every video

This isn’t just a new coat of paint on the same old Home—we’ve coupled a fresh design with more relevant personalized recommendations that make it easier to discover videos you’ll be excited to watch. The new recommendation system is based on deep neural network technology, which means it can find patterns automatically and keep learning and improving as it goes. Every day, we recommend hundreds of millions of different videos on Home, billions of times, in 76 languages.

One of the biggest improvements is how the system suggests more recent videos and those from the creators you love. People who have tried the new system have spent more time watching fresh videos and content from their Subscriptions.

We hope you’ll enjoy your new Home, built just for you!

YouTube introduce Bump Ads

Built for mobile: Bumper ads drive incremental reach and frequency, particularly on smartphones

Tuesday, April 26, 2016

Recent research has shown that half of 18-49 year olds turn to their mobile device first to watch video. Even in the living room, many people prefer to watch on their smartphone – for the control, personalization and ease it offers. And as viewing habits change, we are working to introduce new formats adapted to these habits.

That’s why today we’re announcing Bumper ads – a new six-second video format, sold through the AdWords auction on a CPM basis. Bumper ads are ideal for driving incremental reach and frequency, especially on mobile, where “snackable videos” perform well.

Given the succinct nature of the format, we’ve seen Bumper ads work best when combined with a TrueView or Google Preferred campaign. In early tests, Bumpers drove strong lift in upper funnel metrics like recall, awareness and consideration. We also see that Bumpers work well to drive incremental reach and frequency when paired with a TrueView campaign.

Atlantic Records was an early tester of this new format, using Bumpers to launch English band Rudimental’s second album. As Fiona Byers, Senior Marketing Manager of Atlantic Records/Warner Music Group said, “TrueView and Bumpers were a really important part of the recent Rudimental campaign to tell the story of the band’s second album. Through cost-efficient bumpers we could really showcase the plethora of legendary guests featured on the record. They each gave a short sharp insight into a featured artist and individual track on the album, with TrueView providing the fuller story around the album and the band. When used in conjunction, TrueView plus Bumpers really work more effectively than either format on its own.”

As a quick and fun format, Bumpers lend themselves well to serialized content. Audi Germany cut up their longer TrueView ad to introduce their Q-series SUVs with evocative German “q” words like querpass (cross kick) and quantensprung (quantum leap). Their early adoption of the format mirrors Audi Germany’s tagline “Vorsprung durch Technik” (“advantage through technology”).

We like to think of Bumper ads as little haikus of video ads – and we’re excited to see what the creative community will do with them. You can use Bumpers beginning in May by talking to your Google sales representative, and stay tuned as we continue to roll out new ad formats that are uniquely adapted to the way people watch video now, and in the future.

YouTube TV – as early as next year

CNET say that Bloomberg news are reporting that YouTube is finalizing deals with Broadcast TV and cable channels (that is NBCUniversal, Viacom, Twenty-First Century Fox, and CBS), to launch a paid-for TV service, called ‘UnPlugged’ over the internet, in 2017.

The expected cost is less than $35 a month.

Google Hangouts – direct peer-ot-peer connection

To improve audio and video quality, Hangouts calls use a direct peer-to-peer connection when possible. This allows Hangouts to connect your call directly to the person you’re talking to, rather than routing the call through one of Google’s servers.

When does Hangouts use peer-to-peer calling?

Every Hangouts call starts with all participants connecting to a Google server. The audio and video are then relayed to the people in the call. When there are only two participants in the call, Hangouts may attempt to establish a peer-to-peer connection between them. If the peer-to-peer connection isn’t possible, the Hangout will continue to send and receive audio and video using the existing connection to Google.

This feature will be available for participants on Google Apps with the latest Hangouts apps for iPhone/iPad and Android. We hope to bring this functionality to other devices in the future.

How does peer-to-peer calling help me?

Peer-to-peer connections improve almost all two-participant Hangouts calls. Routing audio and video through a Google server means that your call with a family member in the next town, or your colleague in the other building, could end up traveling farther than needed. Instead, a peer-to-peer connection allows the audio and video to be sent directly, allowing for the best possible quality.

Does Hangouts use peer-to-peer calling for a Hangout with more than two participants?

Peer-to-peer connections are used only for calls with two participants. If any additional participants join, Hangouts will immediately go back to sending and receiving data using the connection to the Google server.

How does peer-to-peer calling impact my personal information?

In order to create a peer-to-peer connection, it is necessary for Google to make the IP address of each participant available to the other. (The IP address is like a phone number; in order for the two devices to speak to each other, they need to know how to contact each other.) Though this happens in the background, it may be possible for a highly motivated and technically proficient person to discover the participants’ IP addresses, which can be used to approximate location. This discovery can happen only during the call.

How does peer-to-peer calling work in an organization?

For organizations with internal networks, a peer-to-peer call where both parties are on the network would take place primarily within the network. If one participant is on the network and the other isn’t, the IP address visible to the other participant is likely to be the IP address of the organization’s gateway, rather than any specific internal network address (this depends on the individual network configuration). This is the same IP address that is displayed when a member of the organization visits a public website. From this perspective, Hangouts operates in the same way as most other Internet-enabled applications.

Periscope sketching

We’re thrilled to introduce a new way to express yourself while broadcasting on Periscope. Now you can sketch on the screen!

Just tap and hold while LIVE and select Sketch.

You can use the three primary colors, or the dropper to pick a color from the live video.

Improved broadcast statistics. We’ve added new viewer and watch time statistics to all broadcasts. As a broadcaster, you can also see a graph of your viewers over time to find your broadcast’s moments with the most reach.

Smaller changes and improvements:

– Fixed issue where the sun overlay was flipped on the map.

– We now show a clear error message if Periscope can’t access your Twitter account (which causes Tweets to fail). If this is happening, try re-entering your Twitter password in iOS settings.

– Added an option in Settings to turn off video stabilization, which could darken broadcasts in low light conditions.

If you like including animated gifs, then maybe Giphy Keys for iOS will be a good solution for you, it includes a keyboard too, so you don’t have to swap between a GIF picker and back to your keyboard. I think that this is for SMS messaging, but I’m not sure from the description whether this is nicely integrated with applications like Twitter, where you would usually upload an animated gif separately or through their own GIF search.

Facebook Canvas …

Canvas is an immersive and expressive experience on Facebook for businesses to tell their stories and showcase their products

You can easily build your Canvas using a combination of videos, still images and call-to-action buttons. In Canvas, people can swipe through a carousel of images, tilt to view panoramic images and zoom in to view images in detail.

Canvas was built to bring your content to life in a fast-loading and seamless experience on Android and iOS. Leveraging the same technology used to display photos and videos quickly in the Facebook app, Canvas loads quickly, as much as 10 times faster than the standard mobile web.

Perhaps we should experiment and demonstrate what it can do ?!

WordPress blogs to support Facebook Instant Articles! But wait – isn’t Instant Articles limited to a handful of publishers? Yes, but from April 12th it will be unlocked to everyone, including Bloggers.

Given that WordPress powers more than 25% of websites on the web (wow) the plugin should enable Bloggers to attract a wider audience. Part of the FB blog …

When Instant Articles opens up in April, publishers that use standard WordPress templates can activate the plugin out-of-the-box to create Instant Articles. Publishers that want a more customized production experience can extend the plugin to support additional elements. We encourage all interested publishers on WordPress to review the plugin’s documentation and FAQs.

The plugin is open source, and we encourage the community to participate in its development to help publishers of all types take full advantage of the fast, native experience of Instant Articles. If you have any feedback, you can send it as an Issue on GitHub. And if you write a compatibility layer for another popular plugin, we encourage you to share it with the WordPress community via a Pull Request.

Our goal from the beginning has been to make Instant Articles available to all publishers and our partnership with Automattic is another exciting step towards realizing that goal on April 12 at our F8 conference. We will continue to iterate the plugin over the coming weeks and look forward to collaborating with the WordPress community to improve the experience.

Facebook buys MSQRD (Masquerade)

The app can transform faces with cartoon graphics, make-up, animal features or accessories. You can see the transformations live and optional record the video generated.

Snapchat have a cool face-swap feature, MSQRD doesn’t seem to have this yet.

Facebook tried to buy in 2013 for $3bn!!

David Wilkinson, managing partner at digital consultancy Soho Strategy said ”I think Facebook has realised Snapchat has something it doesn’t,”

“A lot of people share filtered selfie videos, so I think we can expect to see this integrated into Facebook’s Messenger platform.”

“Snapchat has its own USP as an ephemeral messaging platform, but for the novelty factor people might just use Facebook’s built-in filters.”

Facebook said “”Masquerade has great technology to help us bring even more creative tools to Facebook, and help extend this work to video”

Oculus has announced that it’s adding social features to the company’s VR platform

“Now you can experience games, videos, and more with friends in VR! Starting 10th March, people with a Samsung Gear VR, powered by Oculus, can create a profile and then easily search for others on the platform by real name or Oculus username.”

New Social Games Coming to Gear VR

The immersive sense of virtual reality is even more compelling with friends. Today we’re adding new, made-for-VR games to Gear VR that let you team up with friends or compete against people from all over the world.

We’ve also added the ability to create rooms with friends in Oculus Social. Now you can watch Twitch or Vimeo streams in a room with people you know.

Also, you can leave user reviews for all apps on the Oculus Store. We look forward to your feedback.

Discover Personalized Facebook Content in Oculus Video

Facebook is the best destination for discovering 360 videos from the people and public figures that matter to you. Now, we’re making it even easier to watch 360 content in VR.

We’ve added a new Facebook Videos tab to Oculus Video, and starting next week, you’ll be able to connect your Facebook account with Oculus Video to personalize your 360 video feed based on the pages and people you follow.

In the coming weeks, you’ll be able to like and share your favorite Facebook 360 videos from within VR.

Later this month, we’ll release new tools for developers that make it even easier to create more incredible social VR games and apps.

Virtual reality will continue to drive deeper social connections, and we can’t wait to bring it to more people around the world!

Facebook live video notifications might soon be customisable, so that you can turn them off, however they will still be promoted to the top of your feed. Here’s what a Facebook spokesperson told Engadget in regards to Live Videos and notifications:

“We’ve heard from people that they don’t want to miss live videos from the people or Pages they care about, so we may send a notification if someone you’ve recently interacted with is going live, in case you want to tune in. One way you can currently control notifications for live videos is by clicking on the “Live Subscribe” button on top of the video to get notified when that person goes live again. You can also click on that same button as a way to turn off those specific notifications. However, we know people want more control over the live notifications they receive, so we’re working on improving this experience. We are starting to roll out a new setting that lets people turn off all live notifications, through their Notifications settings, that will be available to all people soon.”

Managing your settings on LinkedIn is now easier than ever

Providing you with clarity and control when it comes to your experience on LinkedIn is a crucial part of our Members First philosophy. Today we’re excited to share that we are making “Privacy & Settings” even more convenient for you, with a streamlined hub to help you easily manage your LinkedIn account. It’s important to note that no settings have been taken away and no default or preferences have been changed – we’ve made sure all settings are in place and are easier to control.

What’s New

When you visit the new “Privacy & Settings” page, you’ll see we’ve redesigned the entire experience, starting with quick details about your account at the top and all settings categorized into three groups: Account, Privacy and Communications.

Account – includes things like adding email addresses, changing your password or language, and exporting your data.

Privacy – covers all privacy and security settings related to what can be seen about you, what information can be used, and making sure your account stays secure with a second factor of authentication.

Communications – houses your preferences for how LinkedIn and other members are able to contact you, and how frequently you’d like to hear from us.

LinkedIn_desktop_settings_view.png

We know that members enjoy connecting with colleagues and acquaintances in their networks. To make connecting easier, if a member has your email address or phone number in the contacts they upload to LinkedIn, we may suggest they connect with you. We’ve added new settings options that let you choose who can see you as a suggested connection when they have your contact info. As always, it’s up to you to decide how you want to grow your network, and which invitations you want to accept.

Katniss-with-border.jpg-768x256.png

We’ll be rolling out this new experience to all members in the next few weeks. In the meantime, be sure to turn on two-step verification for added security and add a backup phone number so you never get locked out of your account.

This is more than double for the same time last year, this could be partly down to the MPAA, RIAA and other copyright-holders are now using algorithms that spot pirated content (often incorrectly) and automatically file takedown notices to Google.

Who had been hospitalised? It turns out a third marketing person, Daniel had emailed me and somewhere along the lines I had assumed the wrong person. What a day. Due to the delays reaching Brighton I couldn’t see Jodie, so I’m hoping to see her in a couple of weeks time.

Facebook are creating image recognition technology to create high resolution population density maps (to within 10m), using neural networks trained to quickly determine whether or not buildings were present or not in satellite images. The purpose is to enable Facebook to determine which areas need better internet access, what technologies would work best and could help with disaster handling too.

Mark Zuckerberg made a surprise appearance at the Samsung Galaxy S7 keynote to explain how putting a VR headset on can be social, he said “Pretty soon, we’re going to live in a world where everyone has the power to share and experience whole scenes, as if we’re there in person”, he also announced the creation of a dedicated VR team – although Devology mentioned this a few weeks ago in our news!

Facebook make Gear VR videos clearer and faster to load, by using ‘dynamic streaming’ resulting in VR videos that are higher quality and more data efficient on the lightweight device. “Dynamic streaming” requires Facebook to process and store all of its videos in multiple resolutions. It only shows the best version for the spot you’re actually looking at — the rest is a lower resolution file that’s automatically swapped out as you look left and right. “By doing this, we’ve quadrupled the resolution quality of 360 streaming video in VR, while reducing the amount of required bandwidth by four times,”

Facebook Messenger

Messenger users on Android can now switch from one account to another using a single device. You can add accounts to Messenger via a new Accounts section in Settings, and you don’t need to be on Facebook in order sign in.

Facebook Live Video is rolling out internationally

To check whether you have the livestreaming tool, select Update Status at the top of your News Feed and hit the new Live Video icon (it should display a banner notifying you of its existence). You’ll then be able to choose who you want to share your stream with and add a description before broadcasting it to the world.

Taking of video, Instagram is now going to show you how many people have viewed your video, within the next several weeks. It will only count if the video has been played more than 3 seconds, in other words, if you scroll past a video it will not count.

http://www.cnet.com/news/instagram-video-count

Facebook Instant Articles are extending the number of publishers who can use the tool, as of April Facebook is opening it up to any publisher interested in leveraging it. This will mean more news articles directly within Facebook so you’ll probably spend more time within it and this will lead to more money through ads to Facebook. On that note – Robs shares are back up 5 1/4% for Facebook and 12% for Amazon.

http://www.engadget.com/2016/02/17/more-facebook-instant-articles/

Facebook Instagram has added two factor authentication but is rolling it out ‘slowly’. Two factor authentication usually means that if you attempt to login (especially from a new device) you’ll receive an SMS text with a code that you must also enter. However, TechCrunch have reported that it behaves somewhat differently to that, instead Instagram gave people reset codes that they had to screenshot or write down when they activated the feature. This just seems too bizarre and I wouldn’t be surprised if this changes.

If you had been caught selling drugs (cannabis) and get a two year suspended sentence, you might be a little appreciative that your not in jail, perhaps humble. But no, a UK man decides to ‘diss the judge’ on social media, he said

“Cannot believe my luck 2 year suspended sentence beats the 3 year jail yes pal! Beverly Lunt go suck my ****,” he posted. The status update has since been removed.

and then followed that up on Facebook with

“I want to say how sorry I am for what I wrote about Judge Lunt and my sentence. I was very lucky not to be sent to prison and I was very stupid to have written what I did. I want to say sorry to Judge Lunt and to anyone else who was upset or offended by my thoughtless post which I did not mean.”

Facebook is testing on Android SMS and multi-account support

“At Messenger we are always trying to create new ways for people to communicate seamlessly with everyone,” said a Facebook spokesperson. “Right now, we’re testing the ability for people to easily bring all their conversations — from SMS and Messenger — to one place. It’s a really simple way to get, see and respond to all your SMS messages in just one app. By choosing to access your SMS messages in Messenger, they’re right alongside all the other enhanced features that Messenger offers.”

The likely reason why it’s Android only at this time is that I’m unaware of any API’s within Apple that will enable you to consume and certainly not post text messages without intervention from the user.

As for multiple accounts they said “Millions of people share phones with their family and friends. Until now, there hasn’t been an easy way for people to access their individual Messenger accounts from shared devices. To address this, we’ve launched a feature on Android to enable multiple people to log in and use Messenger from a single phone.”

Marc Andreessen a Silicon Valley investor and Facebook board member on Wednesday took to Twitter to apologize for a series of offensive tweets he posted the night before apparently referencing India’s colonial history. The world’s second-most populous country, with more than a billion people, was a British colony until 1947. Andreessen said he withdrew his comments “in full and without reservation.”

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg tried to distance himself from his board member. “I want to respond to Marc Andreessen’s comments about India yesterday,” wrote Zuckerberg on his Facebook page. “I found the comments deeply upsetting, and they do not represent the way Facebook or I think at all.”

Facebook’s the ‘Sports Stadium’ was launched only in January and it looks like it struggled to keep up with the supper bowl, with 200 million posts people were getting post updates late, they vented on Twitter with posts such as

“7 minutes of game time into the second half and @facebook sports stadium is still all posts about halftime,”

Facebook said

“Due to overwhelming traffic and activity, people visiting Facebook Sports Stadium during the Super Bowl may have experienced a delay with the scores and play-by-play information available in the Matchup and Stats tabs, or a problem with posting in the Friends tab”

Facebook make it harder to scroll past videos, they are rolling out a tool that automatically captions video ads, the hope is that you’ll stop, even if briefly, to read what a promo is saying instead of skipping to the next post.

Hmm, don’t they get paid if someone ‘watches’ a video for more than 3 seconds, isn’t this just enough to boost their income!?

Last episode we heard Twitters Jack Dorsey say that he was absolutely 100% keeping Twitter ‘LIVE’, however, since then, we can now see that you’ll instead have a ‘what you missed’ summary that can be reverted back to the list timeline in an instant.

In his blog post Twitter’s Jahr said “We love it and think you will too,” he wrote. “If you don’t…you can easily turn it off.”

Within hours of the US Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia’s death, Twitter users had sent more than 650,000 tweets about him, with high praise from conservatives and the oppose from Liberals. Apparently everyone is wondering how the Supreme Court vacancy will affect the coming political year, especially the presidential election.

Twitter is making customer service even better on Twitter with two simple tools, moving tweeters from tweets to direct messages and feedback seem key.

1 – A simple way to start a direct message – available now

Direct Messages are a great way for customers to have a private conversation with a business. Customer service conversations often start in Tweets, but then need to transition to a private channel when personal information is required. We’re making that transition as easy as a single click. A business can now add a deep link to their Tweets that automatically displays a call to action button, which allows the customer to send the business a Direct Message, quickly and easily.

2 – Customer feedback – available over the next few weeks

We’re also announcing a new feature called Customer Feedback that enables people to privately share their opinions with a business after a service interaction.

Care teams have told us they love the open-ended feedback they get from people via Tweets and Direct Messages, but they also need the ability to survey customers in a structured way to better measure and improve their service experience. Customer Feedback makes it easy for customers to share their feedback with a business after a customer service conversation. With this feature, businesses will be able to use two industry standard question formats: Net Promoter ScoreSM (NPS®) and Customer Satisfaction (CSAT).

Twitter helps you find the perfect GIF, it’s being rolled out over a few weeks, you will be able to click the GIF button when you compose a tweet or message and browse popular categories or search with a few keywords to find a GIF. You’ll only be able to post one GIF at a time and you can’t share a regular, not-moving photo and a GIF in the same tweet. Giphy and Riffsy are providing the GIF search engine.

Twitter plans to set up their ‘Twitter Trust & Safety Council’ to combat online abuse and more than 40 organisations are joining the council. The groups in the council include:

 • Safety advocates, academics and researchers focused on children, media and efforts to create a kinder Internet.
 • Grassroots groups that use Twitter to build up and rally followers.
 • Community groups seeking to stop harassment and bullying, as well as those focused on mental health and suicide prevention.

A Twitter spokesman said the company hopes the council will enable it to tackle “issues more efficiently and quickly.”

YouTube wants to attract more acts to it’s ad-free Red Subscription plan, to help with this they have acquired BandPage – it’s a independent platform for musicians. The purchase is probably a way to attract new bands and customers.

SNAPCHAT

Snapchat is apparently planning to let you subscribe to Discover channels, so for example when CNN or ESPN posts a new video, you’ll get to know about it. The company isn’t confirming anything, but Snapchat is reportedly aiming to launch subscriptions as early as May.

SnapChat wants users to pay to make their own Geo Filters, from £5. The minimum geofenced area starts at 20,000 feet; a portion of city block or enough to cover a business location. You can expand that sizing up to 5 million square feet, which Snapchat says will be enough to cover several city blocks. As for timing, you can have the filter live for anywhere from an hour up to 30 days.

YAHOO / TUMBLR

Because we have discussed Yahoo a lot in the past, I just wanted to update you with the fact they are killing digital magazines and laid off its Tech publication’s editor-in-chief. Yahoo media division’s global editor-in-chief Martha Nelson announced on Tumblr that most of its digital magazines, particularly Yahoo Food, Health, Parenting, Makers, Travel, Autos and Real Estate, are shutting down — News, Sports, Finance and Lifestyle will carry on. This has been blamed on a 16.5% active-user drop on the Yahoo homepage. I took a quick look and it does feel like a somewhat dated style which doesn’t help.

Twitter and Facebook support Apple with its fight against the FBI – it’s all about not introducing backdoors into the operating system software, enabling the FBI to gather the intelligence it needs, that would be fine, but leaves massive security holes for hackers.

Steve Wozniak, co-founder of Apple has also come out with strong support for Apples case.

However, it would seem the FBI don’t give up easily and could use dead suspects fingerprints to unlock iPhones!
